Log Stores

Log Stores

A Log Store is an essential tool for any wood-burning stove owner, designed to facilitate the "seasoning" process. By elevating firewood off the damp ground and utilizing slatted sides for maximum airflow, our stores reduce moisture content to below 20%, ensuring a hotter, cleaner burn with less soot buildup. Our collection features UK-made Redwood Pine with 50x50mm heavy-duty framing and low-maintenance metal options, all engineered to protect your fuel investment from the British winter.

Professional Firewood Seasoning & Storage

Effective firewood storage is the difference between a smoky, inefficient fire and a clean, high-heat burn. At Greenhouse Stores, we specialise in log stores designed to facilitate the natural seasoning process. By elevating timber off the ground and ensuring constant airflow, our stores help you reach the critical sub-20% moisture level required for modern wood-burning stoves. For other garden organization needs, browse our Wheelie Bin Storage and Garden Storage Boxes.

Why We Chose This Range

“We stock the Garden Village Billington range because they solve the #1 issue with timber log stores: Structural Sag. Firewood is incredibly heavy (a full store of wet oak can exceed 500kg). While budget stores use thin slats that bow under pressure, our range uses 50x50mm structural framing and FSC-certified Redwood Pine. This ensures the store remains square and the roof stays waterproof for the duration of its 10-year anti-rot guarantee.”

🔧 Matt's Installation Tip: The "Sun & Wind" Rule

To dry wood effectively, your store needs to be more than just a roof. It needs to be a wind tunnel. Never place your log store in a fully enclosed corner or tight against a fence on three sides.

Ideally, position it in a South or West-facing spot that catches the prevailing wind. Leave at least a 10cm gap between the back of the store and your wall. This allows air to circulate behind the logs, preventing the "sweating" that leads to white mould and rot. Also, ensure your base is level (paving slabs or gravel) to prevent the heavy timber frame from twisting.”

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why do I need a raised floor in a log store?

Log stores must have a raised, slatted floor to prevent "rising damp" from the soil. Piling wood directly on the ground causes the bottom layer to rot and absorb moisture.

An elevated floor allows cold air to be drawn up through the stack (the chimney effect), which is essential for seasoning wood to the required 20% moisture level.

  • Should I choose a wooden or metal log store?

Wooden log stores offer a traditional look and are easier to customize with extra hooks for tools. Because wood is a natural insulator, it doesn't "sweat" as much as metal. Metal log stores (like our Hormann range) offer a modern aesthetic and are virtually maintenance-free, though they require very good ventilation to avoid condensation buildup.

  • Do I need a base for my log store?

Yes. A level, solid base such as paving slabs or a gravel pad is required. Because a full log store is extremely heavy, placing it on soft soil will cause it to sink and tilt, which puts uneven stress on the timber joints and can cause the roof to leak.
