About Our Metal Garages
We stock metal garages from Emerald and Absco, built from hot-dipped galvanised steel that resists rust and corrosion in British weather. These garages arrive as flat-pack kits with pre-drilled panels and all fixings included. Assembly typically takes two people a full day with basic hand tools.
Metal garages suit vehicle storage, motorcycle security, workshop space and bulk garden equipment. The galvanised finish means no annual painting or wood treatment. Sliding doors give full-width access for driving in, and most models include padlock-ready hasps for security.
If you prefer timber construction with better insulation, see our wooden garages. For a resin alternative that never rusts, browse our plastic garages. For open vehicle cover, our carports provide rain and UV protection without full enclosure.
Why We Chose This Range
"Metal garages get a bad reputation from cheap tin sheds that dent in the first storm. Emerald and Absco use a heavier gauge steel with proper galvanising that actually lasts. I have assembled dozens of these and the panel fit is good straight out of the box. The Absco models in particular use a snap-lock system that speeds up the build significantly. For pure vehicle storage on a budget, steel is hard to beat."

Matt's Installation Tip
Metal garages amplify condensation in cold weather. The steel panels cool rapidly overnight and water droplets form on the inside surface. If you plan to store anything moisture-sensitive, line the interior with 25mm insulation board or fit a cheap battery-powered dehumidifier. I also recommend applying touch-up paint to any scratches during assembly. Exposed steel in a scratch will rust within months, even on galvanised panels.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do metal garages need planning permission?
Most metal garages fall under permitted development. The building must be single-storey, not exceed 2.5m at the eaves if within 2m of a boundary, and not cover more than half the garden area. Conservation areas and listed properties have stricter rules. Check with your local council before ordering.
Will a metal garage rust in the UK?
Hot-dipped galvanised steel resists rust for 20+ years. The zinc coating creates a sacrificial barrier that protects the base metal. Keep scratches touched up with zinc-rich paint and clear leaves and debris from the roof to prevent standing water. Our Emerald and Absco models use industrial-grade galvanising that handles coastal and high-rainfall areas.
How do I reduce condensation inside a metal garage?
Add interior insulation or improve ventilation. Fit 25mm rigid foam board to the walls and roof to prevent warm air hitting cold steel. Alternatively, install roof vents or a louvre vent in the gable end. Even a small 12V solar fan on the roof ridge makes a noticeable difference in damp months.
Can I anchor a metal garage to a concrete base?
Yes, and you should. Every metal garage we sell includes base rails with pre-drilled holes for concrete anchors. Use M10 expanding bolts into a level concrete slab at least 100mm thick. Anchoring is critical for wind resistance. An un-anchored steel garage can lift off its base in 50 mph gusts.
Are metal garages warm enough for a workshop?
Uninsulated metal garages are cold in winter. Steel conducts heat rapidly so the interior temperature follows the outside air closely. For workshop use, line the walls and ceiling with 50mm insulation board between timber battens. This turns a cold shell into a usable year-round workspace. Budget around £200-400 for materials depending on the garage size.
