The Vitavia Ida is the ultimate problem solver for limited spaces. Whether you need a compact 2ft deep model for a balcony or a spacious 6ft deep lean-to for a patio, the Ida maximizes your available footprint by utilizing the height of your house wall. Uniquely, the largest 6ft wide models feature a clever split-door system, allowing you to position two single doors at the front or separate them to the sides for flexible access. With high eaves and built-in gutters standard across the range, it turns any dead wall space into a productive growing zone.
Installing a lean-to like the Ida requires accuracy. The back wall bar must be perfectly vertical. If your house wall is uneven (like rough stone or pebbledash), you cannot just screw the frame directly to it.
Crucial Step: Use a spirit level to check your wall. If it isn't flat, screw a treated timber batten to the wall first, pack it until it is perfectly plumb, and then attach the greenhouse to the timber. This ensures the roof vents and doors operate smoothly.
Why We Chose This Range
“We stock the Ida because it is the only lean-to range that truly scales. Most manufacturers offer one or two sizes; Vitavia offers a complete lineup. The 2x4 model is the only high-quality glasshouse small enough for a London balcony, while the 6x8 model is substantial enough to double as a sunroom. It allows customers with any size garden to own a proper aluminium greenhouse.”
— Matt, Founder of Greenhouse StoresDoes the Vitavia Ida have a back wall?
No. All lean-to greenhouses are designed to screw directly onto your existing house or garage wall. The wall acts as a "heat sink," absorbing sun during the day and keeping the greenhouse warmer at night.
Can I put the door on either side?
On the 2ft and 4ft wide models, the single sliding door can be positioned on either the left or right front panel. On the larger 6ft wide models, the double doors can be split—you can have them both at the front, or separate them to have one on each side end.
Do I need a base?
We highly recommend the optional Steel Base. It gives you a square, level foundation to build on and adds 12cm of height. If you don't use it, you must build a brick or concrete plinth to the exact dimensions of the frame.
What is the best glazing for a patio?
If your Ida is on a patio where people walk past, or if you have children/pets, you should always choose Toughened Safety Glass. Standard horticultural glass breaks into sharp shards and is dangerous in high-traffic areas.
