2ft wide lean-to greenhouses are built for narrow spaces — side returns, balconies, and passageways as tight as 600mm. Prices range from £219 to £1,599 across brands including Elite, Vitavia, and Access. All models bolt directly against a house wall for shared heat retention — expect 3–5°C warmer than freestanding structures during winter months. Best for: tomatoes, chillies, overwintering tender plants, and seed starting in tight UK gardens.
A 2ft wide lean-to greenhouse fits where nothing else will. We sell these to customers with side returns as narrow as 650mm, balcony growers in flats, and gardeners who want a growing space without sacrificing their patio. The wall-mounted design means the back of your house acts as a thermal mass — absorbing heat during the day and releasing it at night, keeping internal temperatures 3–5°C warmer than a freestanding greenhouse of the same size.
That extra warmth makes a real difference. You can start sowing seeds 2–3 weeks earlier in spring and keep tender plants going 3–4 weeks longer into autumn. For tomato and chilli growers, this extends your UK season from roughly 16 weeks to 22+ weeks without any heating costs.
These models range from simple growhouses and cold frames (from £219) through to full walk-in lean-to structures with hinged doors, roof vents, and toughened safety glass (up to £1,599). The aluminium frames on most models won't rot, warp, or need painting — and they carry manufacturer warranties of 10–25 years depending on the brand.
Small garden owners — if your growing space is limited to a side passage, courtyard, or patio edge, a 2ft lean-to gives you proper greenhouse growing conditions in under 8 sq ft of floor space. Balcony and apartment growers can use compact models like the Vitavia IDA 900 (from £269) without planning permission in most cases. Experienced gardeners often add a 2ft lean-to as a dedicated propagation area alongside a larger main greenhouse — the wall heat makes them ideal for germinating seeds and rooting cuttings.
We carry 2ft lean-to greenhouses from four specialist manufacturers. Each brand has a different strength, and we've tested all of them over our 13+ years in business:
Elite Greenhouses — UK-made in Barnsley with box-section aluminium frames. The Easygrow lean-to range starts at £380 and runs up to £920 for a 2x12 polycarbonate model. Elite frames are made to order in 5 weeks, and the quality of the extrusions is noticeably better than imported alternatives. Available in 26 powder-coated colours with a 25-year frame warranty.
Vitavia — Europe's largest greenhouse manufacturer. The IDA 900 and IDA 1300 lean-to models (from £269) are the most affordable glass lean-to greenhouses on the market. Good value, solid build, 12-year frame warranty. Available in mill-finish aluminium or green powder-coat.
Access — British-designed mini greenhouses and growhouses with toughened safety glass as standard. The Harlow, Hampton, and Harewood ranges (from £324) are built with thicker aluminium profiles than most competitors at this price point. 10-year warranty and 7–10 day delivery on in-stock models.
Stali — premium Belgian-made mini greenhouses with heavy-gauge aluminium and precision engineering. The Stali 2x4 and 2x5 (from £1,499) are the highest-specification compact greenhouses we sell. 10-week lead time.
Your glazing choice affects light transmission, heat retention, safety, and long-term durability. Here's what we've found from 16 years of customer feedback and our own testing:
| Feature | Horticultural Glass | 3mm Toughened Glass | 6mm Polycarbonate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light Transmission | 90% | 90% | 82% |
| Heat Retention | Standard | Standard | 40% better (twin-wall) |
| Safety Rating | Breaks into shards | Shatters safely (BS 6206) | Virtually unbreakable |
| Weight per Panel | Heavier | Heavier | Up to 50% lighter |
| Lifespan | 25–30 years | 25–30 years | 15–20 years |
| UV Degradation | None | None | Can yellow after 10–15 years |
| Price Premium | Lowest cost | +15–25% over horticultural | +20–30% over horticultural |
| Best For | Budget-conscious growers | Families with children or pets | Exposed sites, overwintering |
Our recommendation: If your 2ft lean-to is near a doorway, path, or anywhere children play, go with toughened glass. The safety upgrade typically costs £50–£110 extra and is worth every penny for peace of mind. If heat retention matters most (overwintering plants through UK winters), choose 6mm polycarbonate — the twin-wall construction traps an insulating air layer that keeps your lean-to noticeably warmer on cold nights.
Why We Chose This Range
We've stocked 2ft lean-to greenhouses since 2012, and they're consistently one of our most popular categories — especially with first-time buyers and customers working with small gardens. I picked these specific brands because they cover three distinct price points without dropping below a quality threshold I'm comfortable with. The Vitavia IDA range gives you a proper glass lean-to from £269. The Access range offers British-designed build quality with toughened glass as standard. And the Elite Easygrow is UK-made with a 25-year warranty and 26 colour options — it's genuinely hard to beat on specification. I won't stock 2ft lean-tos that feel flimsy or have poor glazing clips, because returns on cheap greenhouse products cost everyone time and money.
— Matt, Co-Founder of Greenhouse Stores (16 years in the greenhouse industry)The most common mistake I see with 2ft lean-to installations is using the wrong wall fixings. If your house wall is standard brick, use 8mm masonry anchors at 600mm centres along the back frame. For rendered walls, you'll need longer fixings (minimum 75mm) to get past the render into solid masonry. Pebble-dash walls need special care — drill through the render slowly with a masonry bit to avoid cracking the surrounding surface. Always leave a 10mm gap between the greenhouse frame and the wall to allow rainwater to drain, and seal the top junction with a proprietary greenhouse wall flashing strip (around £15–£25) to stop water running down behind the frame.
Every 2ft lean-to greenhouse ships with free UK mainland delivery. In-stock Access models arrive within 7–10 working days. Vitavia lean-tos typically ship within 1–6 weeks. Elite models are made to order in Barnsley and deliver within 5 weeks of your order.
Most 2ft lean-tos can be assembled by one person in 2–4 hours with basic tools (a drill, spirit level, and spanner set). The smaller growhouse models like the Access Harlow take around 90 minutes. If you'd prefer professional assembly, our nationwide installation service covers lean-to greenhouses from £150, depending on your location and model.
In most cases, you won't need planning permission for a 2ft lean-to greenhouse. Under UK permitted development rules, garden structures under 2.5m tall (when within 2m of a boundary) don't typically require planning approval. All 2ft lean-to models we sell fall well within these height limits. The exception is if you live in a listed building, conservation area, or your property has had its permitted development rights removed — check with your local planning authority if you're unsure.

You can grow tomatoes, chillies, peppers, herbs, salad leaves, and overwinter tender plants. A 2ft lean-to provides enough depth for a single row of grow bags or a tiered staging system. Tomato growers typically fit 2–3 cordon plants in a 2x4 model and 4–6 plants in a 2x6 or longer. The wall-mounted position gives extra warmth that's particularly good for heat-loving crops like aubergines and cucumbers during summer months.
Yes, every lean-to greenhouse needs a firm, level base. A poured concrete pad (75mm thick) or paving slabs on a compacted hardcore sub-base are the two most reliable options. The base must be perfectly level — even a 5mm slope across a 2ft width will cause glazing alignment problems during assembly. Our base preparation guide covers exact measurements for each model size.
Some models will, but check the total depth including roof overhang. Compact growhouses like the Vitavia IDA 900 (external width: 690mm, depth: 1,260mm) and Access Harlow Mini (external width: 630mm) are specifically designed for balcony use. You'll need your balcony floor to be strong enough to support the filled weight (typically 40–80kg when loaded with pots and compost), and you must be able to fix the frame securely against a solid wall to prevent wind uplift.
A lean-to greenhouse has a hinged door you walk through and enough headroom to stand inside. A growhouse is shorter (typically 1.2–1.5m tall at the front) and you access plants by lifting the top panels or opening hinged lids. Growhouses cost less (from £320) and suit gardeners who mainly need a protected space for propagation, seedlings, and smaller plants rather than full walk-in growing. Both types mount against a wall.
Very little compared to freestanding greenhouses. Because one side is your house wall (which radiates background heat of 2–4°C into the lean-to), heating costs are roughly 30–40% lower than an equivalent freestanding structure. A small 80W tubular heater (around £25–£35) is usually enough to keep a 2ft lean-to frost-free through a typical UK winter, costing approximately £15–£25 per season to run. Adding bubble wrap insulation to the inside of the glazing cuts heat loss by a further 30%.
