4ft Wide Lean To Greenhouses

4ft wide lean-to greenhouses are the most popular walk-in lean-to size in the UK — wide enough to work inside comfortably, narrow enough to fit a standard side return or patio wall. Prices range from £110 to £1,829 across brands including Elite, Vitavia, Palram Canopia, and Access, with lengths from 4ft to 20ft. All models bolt against your house wall for shared heat retention of 3–5°C above ambient. Choose from horticultural glass, toughened safety glass, or twin-wall polycarbonate glazing.

Why 4ft Is the Most Popular Lean-To Width

A 4ft wide lean-to greenhouse hits the sweet spot between space efficiency and genuine growing capacity. At 1,200mm deep, you have enough room for a full-depth staging bench on one side and a clear walkway, or two narrow benches with a central path. That's a layout most gardeners can actually work in — you can pot up seedlings, train cordon tomatoes, and tend your plants without crouching or reaching awkwardly.

The house wall behind the structure acts as a thermal mass, absorbing heat during the day and slowly releasing it overnight. In our experience across thousands of installations since 2012, lean-to greenhouses at this width hold temperatures 3–5°C warmer than equivalent freestanding models during autumn and winter. That translates to a growing season that's roughly 4–6 weeks longer — you can start sowing in late February and keep harvesting into mid-November in most of southern and central England.

We stock 50+ models in this width, from compact 4x4 structures (around £429) up to serious 4x20 lean-tos that give you 80 sq ft of growing space against a single wall. Lengths beyond 4x12 are popular with customers who use their lean-to as a dedicated growing corridor along the back of the house.

Who Is a 4ft Lean-To Best For?

Tomato and chilli growers — a 4x8 lean-to comfortably fits 6–8 cordon tomato plants in grow bags along the back wall, with room for chillies and peppers on staging at the front. The wall heat gives you measurably better results with heat-loving crops compared to a freestanding greenhouse. Year-round gardeners use the 4x10 and longer models as proper working greenhouses with staging, shelving, and space for overwintering collections of tender perennials, citrus trees, and pelargoniums. Homeowners with limited garden space gain a full-function greenhouse without sacrificing lawn or patio — a 4ft lean-to typically sits against a side return, garage wall, or the back of the house.

4ft Lean-To Brands and Ranges

Elite Greenhouses — Windsor and Kensington Ranges

Elite is our best-selling lean-to brand at 4ft width. They manufacture in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, and every frame is made to order — which means you can choose from 26 powder-coated colours at no extra charge. Two distinct ranges are available:

Elite Windsor — the standard lean-to range. Box-section aluminium frame, sliding door, roof vent included. Available from 4x4 (£429) up to 4x20 (£1,829) in horticultural glass, toughened glass, or 6mm polycarbonate. The Windsor is the model we recommend to most customers because the specification-to-price ratio is hard to beat. 25-year frame warranty. Delivery within 5 weeks of order.

Elite Kensington — the premium lean-to with a taller ridge height and wider door opening than the Windsor. Available from 4x6 (£609) upwards. The extra headroom makes a noticeable difference if you're over 5'10" or plan to grow tall crops like climbing cucumbers. Same 25-year warranty, same 26 colours, same made-to-order process.

Vitavia IDA 3300

Vitavia offers the IDA 3300 as their 4ft lean-to model, available in 4x8 only. Priced from £449 in horticultural glass (the most affordable 4ft walk-in lean-to we sell), it's a solid entry-level option with a 12-year frame warranty. Available in mill-finish aluminium or green powder-coat. Stock held in the UK with delivery in 1–6 weeks.

Palram Canopia

Palram Canopia offers a polycarbonate lean-to in 8x4 configuration. The twin-wall polycarbonate panels give 40% better heat retention than single-glazed glass and are virtually unbreakable — a good choice if your lean-to is near a play area or exposed to prevailing wind. Delivery within 3–5 working days.

Access Mini Greenhouses

Several Access compact models (2x4 and 4x4 sizes) appear in this category. These include growhouses, tomato houses, and midi greenhouses — all British-designed with toughened safety glass as standard. Priced from £320 with free 7–10 day delivery and a 10-year warranty.

Elite Windsor vs Kensington: Which Should You Choose?

Best For Most gardeners — best value, widest size range Taller gardeners, tall crops, premium finish

Our recommendation: The Elite Windsor covers 90% of customers. Pick the Kensington if you're over 5'10" and want more comfortable working headroom, or if you're growing tall crops like climbing beans or cucumbers. The price premium of £100–£150 per size buys you genuine extra space, not just a badge upgrade. If budget is the priority, the Vitavia IDA 3300 at £449 gets you into a 4ft walk-in lean-to at the lowest possible price.

Glazing Options for 4ft Lean-To Greenhouses

Glazing Type Light Transmission Heat Retention Safety Price Impact
Horticultural Glass 90% Standard Breaks into shards Lowest cost
3mm Toughened Glass 90% Standard Shatters safely (BS 6206) +£150–£300
6mm Twin-Wall Polycarbonate 82% 40% better Virtually unbreakable +£100–£250

Our advice: Toughened glass is the upgrade we recommend most often for 4ft lean-tos. Because these are walk-in structures — often near back doors and patios — the safety factor matters. A panel knocked by a wheelbarrow, a football, or a strong gust will shatter safely into small cubes rather than dangerous shards. The premium is typically £150–£300 depending on the model length. If winter growing and heat retention are your priority, polycarbonate's twin-wall insulation gives you a genuine 40% reduction in heat loss.

Why We Chose This Range

4ft lean-tos are our highest-selling lean-to width, and we've been refining this range since 2012. Elite dominates our 4ft lean-to sales because the Windsor and Kensington models are genuinely UK-made — I've visited the factory in Barnsley and seen the extrusion process. The box-section aluminium frames are thicker and more rigid than anything I've found from European imports at the same price. The 25-year frame warranty backs that up. Vitavia gives us the entry-level price point that customers need — the IDA 3300 isn't as refined as the Elite, but at £449 for a proper walk-in 4ft lean-to with glass glazing, it's the best value in the UK market. Access fills the compact end for customers who want 4ft as a length rather than a width. I won't stock lean-tos that flex when you push the frame sideways — it's a sign of weak extrusions that'll cause glazing problems in wind.

🔧 Matt's Installation Tip: Getting the Base Right for a 4ft Lean-To

At 4ft wide, your base preparation is more involved than the smaller 1ft or 2ft lean-tos. A poured concrete pad (minimum 75mm thick on 50mm compacted hardcore) is my top recommendation for anything 4x6 and above. For 4x4 models, level paving slabs work fine. The critical measurement is the diagonal — check corner-to-corner in both directions and they must match within 5mm. If the diagonals are off, your door won't slide properly and the glazing bars won't line up. Leave a 50mm overhang on all three open sides for drainage, and fix a wall flashing strip along the top junction to stop rainwater running behind the frame. On rendered or pebble-dash walls, use fixings at least 75mm long to reach solid masonry behind the render. I'd also strongly recommend fitting at least one auto-vent (around £30–£40) to any 4ft lean-to — they heat up fast in summer against a south or west-facing wall, and temperatures above 35°C will damage most crops within hours.

Delivery, Assembly and Installation

Every 4ft lean-to greenhouse ships with free UK mainland delivery. In-stock Vitavia models deliver within 1–6 weeks. Access models ship within 7–10 working days. Elite lean-tos are made to order in Barnsley and deliver within 5 weeks. Palram Canopia polycarbonate models are typically dispatched within 3–5 working days.

Assembly time depends on the model length. A 4x4 takes one person around 3–4 hours. A 4x8 is a comfortable half-day job for two people. Anything 4x12 or above is a full-day project and benefits from two pairs of hands. You'll need a drill, spirit level, step ladder (for roof bars), and a basic spanner set. All wall fixings and glazing clips are included in the box.

If you'd prefer professional assembly, our nationwide installation service covers all lean-to greenhouses. Prices start from around £200 for smaller models. Call 0800 098 8877 for a quote based on your model and postcode.

Planning Permission for 4ft Lean-To Greenhouses

Most 4ft lean-to greenhouses fall within UK permitted development rights and don't need planning permission. The key limits: the structure must be under 2.5m at the highest point if it's within 2m of a boundary, and total garden buildings must not cover more than 50% of your garden's curtilage. All 4ft lean-to models we sell meet the 2.5m height requirement. If your property is listed, in a conservation area, or has had permitted development rights removed, check with your local planning authority before ordering.

4ft Wide Lean-To Greenhouse FAQs

What is the best 4ft lean-to greenhouse for the money?

The Elite Windsor 4x6 in horticultural glass at £479 is our best-value recommendation for a walk-in 4ft lean-to. It's UK-made with box-section aluminium, includes a sliding door and roof vent, and carries a 25-year frame warranty. If budget is tight, the Vitavia IDA 3300 4x8 starts at £449 with a 12-year warranty — you get more floor space for a lower price, though the frame isn't quite as refined. For maximum growing space on a budget, it's hard to beat.

How much space do I need for a 4ft lean-to greenhouse?

You need at least 4ft (1,200mm) of clear depth from your wall and enough length along the wall for the model you choose. Allow an extra 100–150mm on all open sides for roof overhang and drainage clearance. The wall itself must be solid masonry (brick, block, stone) — timber-frame walls, fence panels, and rendered stud walls are not suitable for lean-to mounting. Check for obstructions like downpipes, external taps, and soil vent pipes along the mounting line before ordering.

What can I grow in a 4ft lean-to greenhouse?

Almost anything you'd grow in a standard freestanding greenhouse. Tomatoes (6–8 cordon plants in a 4x8), cucumbers, chillies, peppers, aubergines, herbs, salad leaves, strawberries, and early potatoes all do well. The wall heat makes 4ft lean-tos particularly strong for heat-loving crops. You can start sowing in late February and harvest through to mid-November — roughly 4–6 weeks longer than an open garden. For winter use, the lean-to format keeps heating costs around 30–40% lower than a freestanding greenhouse of the same floor area.

What is the difference between the Elite Windsor and Kensington lean-to?

The Kensington has a taller ridge height and wider door opening than the Windsor. Both use the same box-section aluminium frame, both carry a 25-year warranty, and both are available in 26 colours. The Kensington costs £100–£150 more per size and is worth the upgrade if you're over 5'10" or growing tall crops like climbing cucumbers. The Windsor is available in more lengths (up to 4x20), while the Kensington goes up to 4x14.

Do I need a concrete base for a 4ft lean-to greenhouse?

Yes, we strongly recommend a concrete base for all 4ft lean-tos 4x6 and above. A poured concrete pad (75mm thick on 50mm compacted hardcore) gives you the most stable and level platform. For 4x4 models, level paving slabs on compacted hardcore are fine. The base must be perfectly level — check the diagonal measurements corner-to-corner, and they should match within 5mm. Our base preparation guide has exact dimensions for each model.

Will a 4ft lean-to greenhouse need planning permission?

No, in most cases. All 4ft lean-to greenhouses we sell fall under 2.5m at the highest point and meet the criteria for UK permitted development rights. You don't need to apply for planning permission as long as your total garden buildings don't cover more than 50% of the curtilage, and the lean-to isn't forward of the front elevation of your house. Listed buildings, conservation areas, and properties with removed PD rights are exceptions — contact your local council to check.
