Autovents and Openers

A greenhouse louvre vent is the most critical component for low-level air intake and temperature regulation. By drawing in cooler, CO2-rich air from the ground level, louvres create a "chimney effect" that pushes hot, stagnant air out through the roof vents. Our professional-grade 5-blade and 6-blade louvre kits are engineered from corrosion-resistant aluminium and are designed to replace a standard pane of glass, providing precision-controlled ventilation that prevents fungal diseases and heat-stress in summer months.

About Our Automatic Vent Openers

An automatic vent opener lifts your greenhouse roof vent by temperature alone. No electricity, no wiring, no batteries. A sealed wax piston expands in the heat and pushes the vent open, then closes it as the air cools. Prices in this range start at £46, so you can protect a single vent for the cost of a few seed trays. We fit these on customer greenhouses every week, and they are the single best upgrade for anyone who leaves the house during the day.

Most openers in this range lift a standard roof vent and rate for 5kg to 7kg of glass. The wax cylinder starts opening around 15°C and reaches full travel by 25°C. We stock Bayliss, Elite, Vitavia and Palram units, plus replacement pistons so a tired opener costs £34 to revive rather than a full swap. For more airflow options see our greenhouse roof vents, browse the wider greenhouse ventilation range, or shop all greenhouse accessories.

Why We Chose This Range

“We rate every opener on two things: lift weight and seal quality. Cheap units sag under heavy toughened glass and leave the vent half open on cold nights. The Bayliss MK7 lifts a heavy vent without strain and shuts tight, so heat stays in after dark. We keep the lighter Vitavia and Elite units for aluminium-framed vents where weight is not an issue. Match the opener to the glass and it will run for years.”

Matt, Founder of Greenhouse Stores
Matt's Tip: Size the opener to your vent weight

Weigh your vent before you buy. A toughened-glass vent needs a 7kg-rated opener. A polycarbonate or single-pane vent runs fine on a 5kg unit. Fitting an under-rated opener to heavy glass burns out the wax piston in one season.

🔧 Matt's Installation Tip: Free the vent first

Before you fit the arm, open and close the vent by hand. It must move freely with no scraping. If the frame is stiff, the opener fights that friction every cycle and the piston fails early. A drop of silicone on the hinges once a year keeps it smooth. Set the opener fully closed at the start, then let the spring do the rest.

Bayliss MK7 Automatic Roof Vent Opener

Matt's Pick: Bayliss MK7

Best For: heavy toughened-glass roof vents

Why I Recommend It: it lifts the heaviest vents without sagging and seals tight on cold nights, so it outlasts the budget openers we used to stock.

Frequently asked questions

How does an automatic vent opener work?

A sealed wax piston expands in heat and pushes the vent open. As the air cools, the wax contracts and a spring pulls the vent shut. No power is needed. The cylinder starts moving around 15°C and reaches full travel near 25°C.

Do automatic vent openers need electricity?

No. They run entirely on a temperature-sensitive wax piston. There is no wiring, no battery and no running cost. This is why they keep working during a power cut or when you are away.

What lift weight do I need?

Match the opener to your vent glass. A toughened-glass vent needs a 7kg-rated opener such as the Bayliss MK7. A lighter polycarbonate or aluminium vent runs fine on a 5kg unit like the Vitavia or Elite.

Can I replace just the wax piston?

Yes, on most openers. A worn cylinder costs £34 to swap rather than buying a whole new opener. We stock replacement pistons for the Elite and Vitavia units in this range.

Will one opener fit any greenhouse?

Brand-matched openers fit best. Elite, Vitavia and Palram each make a unit sized for their own vent frames. The Bayliss MK7 and XL are universal and fit most standard roof vents with the supplied brackets.
