Black Greenhouses

Black greenhouses suit contemporary gardens where chrome or green frames would look out of place. The powder-coated finish adds a layer of UV protection on top of the aluminium. Our black range is all Janssens, from the Master Victorian up to the Helios Retro. Sizes run from 10x10 to 10x19, with prices from £4,640 and free UK delivery.

Why We Chose This Range

“Black frames have become our best-selling finish since 2022, but not all powder coatings are equal. We specifically select Elite and Vitavia for this range because they use a high-micron architectural powder coat. It doesn't just look better; it’s significantly more resistant to the 'chalking' and fading seen on cheaper imports. For a garden centre piece that looks as good in year 15 as it does on day one, these are the models I personally recommend.”

Matt's installation tip: thermal management

While black frames look incredible, they absorb more solar heat than silver aluminium. When installing, ensure your automatic roof vents are calibrated early. I recommend adding at least one louvre side vent to your black greenhouse to create a 'chimney effect', this prevents the dark frame from radiating excess heat onto sensitive seedlings during July peaks.

Always ensure your base is 100% level to prevent the black coating from rubbing on door tracks. Read our full base preparation guide here.

Frequently asked questions

Do black greenhouses get too hot?

The black frame does absorb more heat than a natural aluminium finish, but this is actually an advantage during the UK's shoulder seasons (Spring and Autumn). During the height of summer, as long as you have adequate ventilation, such as automatic roof vents and louvre windows, the internal temperature remains identical to any other greenhouse.

Will the black powder coating peel or rust?

No. Our black greenhouses use a professional powder-coating process where the colour is baked onto the aluminium at high temperatures. This makes a bond far stronger than standard paint, making it resistant to UV fading, peeling, and rust. Most of our black ranges, including Elite and Vitavia, come with a 10 to 20-year frame warranty.

Are black greenhouses more expensive?

There is usually a slight premium for the powder-coating process compared to a raw 'mill' finish. However, the aesthetic value and the added protection the coating provides to the aluminium frame often result in a higher resale value for your property and a longer-lasting structure.
