Carports

A Carport is the smart alternative to a garage extension. While a garage can trap moisture leading to chassis rust, a carport provides constant airflow while shielding your vehicle from the three main enemies of automotive paintwork: UV radiation, tree sap, and hard frost. Our collection focuses on structural integrity, featuring Palram's virtually unbreakable polycarbonate glazing and Palmako's heavy-duty glulam timber arches, designed to withstand UK snow loads up to 100kg/m².

About Our Carports

A carport delivers practical vehicle protection without the planning hassles or cost of a traditional garage. Our collection includes models ranging from compact lean-to designs to spacious double carports that shelter two vehicles. Whether you're protecting a family car from frost damage or shielding a caravan from UV degradation, you'll find metal carports offering modern durability and wooden carports providing traditional aesthetics.

The polymer frame construction reduces maintenance requirements by 80% compared to painted steel alternatives. You won't spend weekends treating rust spots or repainting surfaces. British weather throws everything at outdoor structures—our carports handle it. The polycarbonate roofing blocks harmful UV rays whilst transmitting natural light, preventing the dark, cave-like feel of solid metal roofs.

Choosing Your Carport

Measurements: A standard single carport measures 3m wide by 5m deep, accommodating most family cars. Double carports span 5-6m wide. Lean-to carports save 30-40% on materials by attaching to an existing wall.

Material Choice: Metal carports using aluminium frames last 25+ years with zero rust concerns and suit modern homes. Wooden carports deliver traditional charm matching older properties but require timber treatment every 3-5 years.

Carport vs Garage: Cost Comparison

  • Average Cost: Carports are approx 80% cheaper (£800-£2,500 vs £9,000+).
  • Installation Time: 1-2 days vs 6-8 weeks for a garage.
  • Ventilation: Carports offer excellent airflow, drying wet cars faster and preventing chassis rust compared to damp, enclosed garages.

Why We Chose This Range

“We stock Palram Canopia carports for one reason: The roof panels do not yellow or crack. Many budget carports use cheap PVC that turns brittle and opaque after two summers. Palram uses high-impact polycarbonate—the same material used in riot shields. It blocks 100% of harmful UV rays (protecting your car's clear coat) but allows safe light transmission, and it will essentially never shatter.”

🔧 Matt's Installation Tip: The "Concrete Cube" Rule

A carport is effectively a giant wing. If the wind catches it, the uplift force is massive. You cannot just screw the posts into paving slabs or tarmac; they will rip out.

For every support post, you must dig a hole approximately 50cm x 50cm x 50cm and fill it with concrete to create a heavy anchor cube. The post brackets should be bolted into this cured concrete. This 'ballast' is the only thing keeping your carport on the ground during a winter storm.”

Frequently Asked Questions about Carports

  • How much does a carport cost in the UK?

Carports range from £800 for basic lean-to aluminium models to £3,300 for premium double timber structures. Most family car carports cost between £1,200-£1,800 including free UK delivery.

  • Do I need planning permission for a carport?

Most carports are "Permitted Development" if they cover less than 50% of your property, stay under 2.5m height near boundaries, and sit within your property line. However, always check rules for Conservation Areas or Listed Buildings.

  • Can I bolt a carport directly to my tarmac driveway?

No. Tarmac softens in summer heat and cannot hold expanding bolts under tension. You must cut a square out of the tarmac, dig down, pour a concrete pad, and bolt the carport posts to that secure foundation.

  • Which is better: Aluminium or Wooden carports?

Aluminium is maintenance-free, lighter, and won't rot, making it ideal for modern homes. Wood offers a traditional look and supports heavier snow loads but requires treatment every few years to prevent rot.

  • Does the roof block UV rays?

Yes, our Palram carports use advanced polycarbonate glazing that blocks 100% of harmful UV rays. This prevents your car's paintwork from fading and protects interior dashboards from cracking.
