Multi-Tier Grow Racks

Multi-tier grow racks for microgreens, salad leaves, herbs and propagation. Two-tier base racks stand on the floor and stack two growing trays in the footprint of one. Height extension sets add a further level to a rack you already own. Every frame is 25 mm aluminium tubular profile with steel-reinforced corners, sized to fit ebb and flow trays from 0.52 m up to 2 metres wide. Prices run from £65 for an extension set to £519 for the widest base rack.

Choose the base rack first, then add an extension set when you want more height. Match the rack width to the tray you grow in. The smallest racks suit a windowsill of microgreens; the widest carry a full 2 x 1 m propagation tray.

About Our Grow Racks

A grow rack is a second floor for your trays. It stacks two growing trays on one aluminium frame, so you get twice the growing area off the same patch of floor. Good for microgreens, salad leaves, herbs and propagation. We stock the range in two parts: two-tier base racks that stand on the floor, and height extension sets that add a level to a rack you already own. Base racks run from 57 cm wide up to 209 cm, all 136 cm tall, with prices from £195 to £519. Frames are 25 mm aluminium with steel-reinforced corners, so greenhouse damp does them no harm.

You are choosing the base rack by the tray you grow in. The small 0.52 x 0.52 m rack suits a tray or two of microgreens. The wide 2 x 1 m unit is for propagation in volume. Watch the load rating as the racks get bigger. Narrow racks take 70 kg per square metre; the two-metre ones drop to 40. Buy the base rack first. An extension set is no use on its own, it only bolts onto a rack that is already standing. Pair a rack with a matching ebb and flow tray and add an irrigation kit, and you have a flood-and-drain bench ready to plant.

Why We Chose This Range

"These racks earn their place because they are honest about what they are. The base rack does the stacking and stands wherever you put it. The extension set is just the extra level, and it has no legs of its own. People order an extension on its own and then find it will not stand up, so I want that clear from the start. If you are new to vertical growing, start with one of the small two-tier racks, get a feel for how much you actually grow, and add height later. There is no rush to buy the big 2 x 1 m unit on day one."

💡 Tip: Heavy trays go on the bottom, lightest seedlings up top. A watered tray weighs far more than a dry one, and loading the base tier first keeps the rack stable when you reach across it.

🔧 Matt's Fitting Tip: Check your headroom first

A base rack stands 136 cm and a height extension adds another 40.5 cm, so a stacked rack pushes past 1.7 metres. Hold that against your greenhouse roof or shelf before ordering, or the top tray ends up jammed against the glass.

Frequently asked questions

What is a grow rack?

A grow rack is a free-standing frame that stacks growing trays in tiers. It gives you two levels of growing space in the footprint of one tray, which suits microgreens, salad leaves, herbs and propagation. Our base racks hold two tiers and stand 136 cm tall.

What is the difference between a base rack and a height extension set?

The base rack is the full free-standing unit; the extension set is an add-on tier. A base rack stands on its own with two tiers. An extension set has no legs and bolts on top of a rack you already own to add a third level. Buy the base rack first.

What size grow rack do I need?

Match the rack to your ebb and flow tray and the space you have. The small 0.52 x 0.52 m rack suits a windowsill or a tray of microgreens. The wide 2 x 1 m rack is built for propagation in volume. Base racks span 57 cm to 209 cm wide.

How much weight can a grow rack hold?

Load capacity runs from 70 kg per square metre on the narrower racks down to 40 kg per square metre on the two-metre-wide units. A watered tray is heavier than it looks, so keep the heaviest trays on the bottom tier.

What are grow racks made of?

Every rack is aluminium tubular profile, 25 mm, with steel-reinforced corner pieces. Aluminium will not rust or rot in greenhouse damp, so the racks are happy to stay up all year in a humid growing space.

Can I use a grow rack as greenhouse shelving?

Yes, a grow rack doubles as sturdy greenhouse shelving. The tiers hold seed trays, pots and propagators just as well as ebb and flow trays, so many growers use them as general staging through the colder months. Browse our grow tables and benches if you want a single-tier bench, or the wider hydroponics and irrigation range to feed them.
