About our toughened glass greenhouse range
Toughened glass is heat-treated glass roughly four times the strength of standard horticultural glass. It costs more, but it's the glazing we fit at any site where wind, children, pets or pure long-term peace of mind matter. Our range covers 327 models across aluminium, thermo wood and lean-to formats, with prices from £320 for a compact Access growhouse up to £36,630 for the largest Janssens Gigant Victorian.
Why we chose this range
Matt W., Greenhouse Stores — 14 years installing greenhouses across the UK:
"I've personally fitted toughened glass into Vitavia, Elite, Janssens and Swallow greenhouses on coastal sites in Whitstable, hilltop plots in the Peak District and exposed corners of the Pennines. The five brands on this page are the ones that survive the install and the first three winters without a callback. We've dropped four brands off this collection in the last six years because the glass-frame fit was too loose — you only need one corner pane to crack on a cold morning to learn that lesson."
Matt's Pick for most UK gardens
Matt's Pick: Vitavia 8x6 Venus 5000 Toughened
Best For: First-time owners with a normal back-garden site and a real wind exposure once or twice a year.
Why I Recommend It: The pane sizes are sensible (not so big that one breakage hurts), the door is a real sliding aluminium with a proper catch, and the toughened glass is dry-clipped into the frame so a panel swap is a 10-minute job, not a 90-minute one.

Quick guide: which toughened greenhouse for which garden?
- Town garden, sheltered, under 6x6: An Access toughened lean-to or 6x4 Vitavia Venus 2500 is plenty.
- Open suburban garden, 6x8-8x10: Vitavia Venus 5000, Elite Belmont or Janssens Helios Urban.
- Coastal, hilltop or exposed corner: Janssens Helios Senior, or a Swallow Kingfisher thermo wood build with our free install.
- Wall-side or yard: A toughened-glass lean-to on a half-depth footprint.
Matt's Installation Tip
If you're glazing a toughened greenhouse yourself, get the frame square before the glass goes in. We see one self-installer a month ring up with a cracked corner pane because the frame was 8-12 mm out of square and the toughened pane wouldn't flex to take it. Set the base level to within 5 mm corner-to-diagonal, check both diagonals with a tape measure, then bolt the roof bracing before any glass loads onto the gables. Toughened glass either fits the frame or it shatters — it will not give.
Toughened glass greenhouse pricing — what you'll actually pay
Most aluminium toughened greenhouses in this range land between £500 and £2,500 for a 6x4 to 8x10 footprint. Swallow thermo wood builds (which include free UK installation) start at £2,575 and the most popular Kingfisher and Raven sizes sit between £3,500 and £7,500 fully fitted. The Janssens Helios and Gigant ranges cover the £2,510 to £36,630 bracket if you want a heavyweight period-style build. We also list base kits, automatic vent openers and shelving on each product page so you can specify the full set before ordering.
Frequently asked questions
-
Is toughened glass safer than horticultural glass for a greenhouse?
Yes — toughened glass shatters into rounded pebble-sized fragments, not the long shards that cause laceration injuries. It's the glazing we fit on every install where children, pets or busy paths are nearby. Horticultural glass is still fine in sheltered, low-traffic spots, but we wouldn't put it next to a school-run path.
-
How much extra does toughened glass cost over horticultural?
On a 6x8 aluminium frame, the toughened upgrade is typically £80-£150. On larger frames it scales to £200-£400. On Janssens and Swallow models toughened glass is the standard glazing so there's no upgrade fee — it's already in the listed price.
-
Do I need toughened glass for a coastal or windy site?
We strongly recommend it. Toughened glass holds its shape under gusts and adds 35-45 kg of stabilising weight to a 6x8 frame. Standard horticultural glass flexes more in wind and will lift out of the clips on exposed sites. On any plot inside 5 miles of the coast or above 150 m elevation, we won't quote anything but toughened.
-
Can I replace a single toughened pane if it breaks?
Yes — single panes can be reordered through us using your greenhouse model and pane reference. Vitavia, Elite and Janssens panes are dry-clipped into the frame, so a swap is a 10-15 minute job. Swallow thermo wood greenhouses use timber beading and take about 20-30 minutes per pane.
-
How long does a toughened glass greenhouse last?
On our installer records, an aluminium toughened build typically reaches 25-30 years before any structural rework, and 40+ years on the Janssens heavyweight frames. The glass itself doesn't degrade with UV, unlike polycarbonate which yellows and softens after 10-15 years. Swallow thermo wood frames last 30-50 years with normal retreatment.
-
Is the installation service free on Swallow toughened glass greenhouses?
Yes — free UK installation is included on every Swallow wooden greenhouse, with toughened glass fitted as standard. Our team handles base check, frame build, glazing and a final water-tightness test in a single visit. On aluminium ranges (Vitavia, Elite, Janssens, Access) installation is an optional paid service.
-
What base do I need for a toughened glass greenhouse?
A level, square base within 5 mm corner-to-diagonal. Concrete slab, paving slabs on a compacted MOT type 1 sub-base, or a manufacturer steel base kit are all fine. Avoid timber-only bases on aluminium toughened frames — timber moves with damp and warps the frame square, which is the most common cause of cracked panes in our callout log.
