About our Victorian greenhouses
A Victorian greenhouse brings real period style to a British garden, but the shape earns its keep too. Our range splits into wooden Victorian greenhouses in Thermowood timber and aluminium models that pair classic looks with low upkeep. Every one carries the signature steep 45° roof pitch, high eaves around 1.8m to 2.1m, and the ornate ridge cresting that defined the great age of British glasshouses.
The range runs from compact Elite Thyme 6ft wide greenhouses under £1,500, through roomier Elite Thyme 8ft wide greenhouses, up to the Swallow Eagle wooden greenhouses with free UK installation. All come with toughened safety glass, automatic roof vents, and warranties of 10 to 12 years.
Why We Chose This Range
"I have stood in a lot of greenhouses on cold March mornings, and the Victorian shape genuinely behaves differently. The high ridge holds a pocket of warmer air the plants sit up into, and the steep glass throws winter light deeper into the house. We keep the Swallow Eagle because Yorkshire build quality on a wooden frame is hard to beat, and the Elite Thyme because it gives you the same look in aluminium with no upkeep. For most people I steer them to a dwarf wall: the brick base is what turns a pretty greenhouse into a year-round one."
— Matt, Founder of Greenhouse StoresChoosing a Victorian greenhouse: quick guide
It usually comes down to wood against aluminium. Swallow wooden Victorian greenhouses use Thermowood with a natural oiled finish and want re-oiling only every 2 to 3 years. They insulate better, holding 3 to 5°C over an aluminium equivalent, which is why we send year-round growers their way. The Swallow Eagle range includes free installation, a 12-year warranty, and full-length staging benches.
Aluminium Victorian greenhouses like the Elite Thyme need no upkeep at all and come powder-coated in dark green, black, or anthracite grey. Prices start around £1,399 for a 6ft × 4ft and climb past £3,500 for the big 8ft-wide sizes. They are British-made, take 3mm toughened glass, and carry a 10-year framework guarantee. Fitting is available through our UK installation service.
🔧 Matt's Installation Tip: Get the dwarf wall square first
On a dwarf-wall model the greenhouse is only ever as true as the brickwork under it. Build the wall to our plan, check it for square across both diagonals before the mortar sets, and leave it a week to cure. A wall 10mm out of square will fight you all the way up the glazing.
Matt's Pick: Elite Thyme 6x8 Dwarf Wall
Best For: A year-round Victorian greenhouse on a sensible footprint.
Why I Recommend It: The dwarf wall does the heat-retention work, the 6x8 gives you a proper growing run plus a potting end, and the aluminium frame means you never touch it again.
Price: from £1,319
Frequently asked questions
-
What makes a greenhouse Victorian style?
It is the steep 45 to 50° pitched roof, high eaves over 1.8m, and ornate ridge cresting. These details came out of the 1840s to 1900s glasshouse era and lift both headroom and light by up to 30% over a standard greenhouse.
-
What's the difference between wood and aluminium Victorian greenhouses?
Wood insulates better, running 3 to 5°C warmer inside, and looks the part, but it wants re-oiling every 2 to 3 years. Aluminium needs no upkeep, comes in several powder-coat colours, and costs less to start, though it lacks the timber's warmth and thermal edge.
-
Do Victorian greenhouses need a dwarf wall?
No, only the dwarf-wall models do. Standard models sit on a paving slab or concrete base. Dwarf-wall frames are built to drop onto a 450mm to 600mm brick wall you lay separately, which improves heat retention by 35 to 40%. We provide the wall plans when you order.
-
Are Victorian greenhouses more expensive?
Usually 15 to 25% more than a barn-style greenhouse of the same size, because of the steeper pitch and extra glass. Budget roughly £1,399 to £2,200 for a 6ft aluminium model, and £3,500 to £6,500 for an 8ft wooden one with free installation.
-
Which Victorian greenhouse brands do you stock?
Two we trust: Elite Thyme, British-made aluminium with a 10-year warranty, and Swallow wooden greenhouses, Yorkshire-built Thermowood with a 12-year warranty and free installation. Both makers have decades of UK glasshouse experience.
-
Do you offer installation for Victorian greenhouses?
Swallow wooden Victorian greenhouses include free installation across mainland UK, with a small charge north of Glasgow. For Elite aluminium models we arrange professional installation separately, usually within two weeks of delivery.
