Swallow Greenhouses

Swallow Greenhouses represent the pinnacle of British timber craftsmanship, solving the age-old problem of wooden greenhouses: Rot. Unlike standard pressure-treated timber, Swallow uses Scandinavian ThermoWood®, which is "cooked" at 215°C to remove moisture and resin. This thermal modification kills the nutrients that fungi feed on, making the timber structurally stable and rot-resistant for decades without chemical treatment. Every model includes Free Professional Installation, ensuring your greenhouse is erected perfectly by the same craftsmen who built it.

Why Choose a Swallow Wooden Greenhouse?

Swallow Greenhouses are widely regarded as the UK's leading timber greenhouse manufacturer. Made in Yorkshire, they combine traditional joinery with modern material science. The key difference is the use of ThermoWood®—timber that has been heat-treated to 215°C. This process destroys the cell structure that holds moisture, meaning Swallow greenhouses resist warping, twisting, and rot far better than standard pressure-treated alternatives.

Every Swallow building includes Free Professional Installation. Whether you choose a standard growing model, a specialized Swallow Potting Shed, or a dual-purpose Combi Shed Greenhouse, the factory team delivers and erects the building on your prepared base, usually in a single day.

Key Features of the Swallow Range

  • ThermoWood Construction: Rot-resistant without harsh chemicals.
  • Toughened Glass: 3mm safety glass is standard (not an upgrade).
  • Automatic Vents: Bayliss auto-openers included on every roof vent.
  • Damp Barrier: A 20mm PVC strip sits under the timber base to prevent ground moisture wicking up.

Why We Chose This Range

“We prioritize Swallow for customers who want a 'turn-key' solution. Most wooden greenhouses arrive as a flat-pack puzzle of hundreds of pieces. Swallow is different. They manufacture the panels in Yorkshire and send their own factory team to install it in your garden. This eliminates the risk of DIY errors and ensures the 12-year warranty is valid from day one. Plus, the ThermoWood smell is incredible!”

🔧 Matt's Installation Tip: The "13mm" Rule

Since Swallow install the building for you, your base must be ready before they arrive. They are strict about levels.

Your concrete or slab base must be level within a 13mm tolerance across the entire footprint. If it slopes more than this, the pre-made panels won't align, and the glass will crack. Use a long spirit level to check diagonals. If the team arrives and the base isn't level, they may have to abort the install, which incurs a revisit charge.”

Frequently Asked Questions about Swallow Greenhouses

  • How does the 20% deposit work?

You pay just a 20% deposit when you place your order to secure your slot in the manufacturing queue. The remaining 80% balance is not due until after the greenhouse has been delivered and fully installed in your garden, giving you total peace of mind.

  • Should I choose Oiled or Painted finish?

Oiled preserves the natural wood look but requires re-oiling every 1-2 years to maintain the colour (though it won't rot if you miss a year). Painted models are spray-coated in the factory and are virtually maintenance-free for 5-7 years, but cost more initially.

  • Do I need a concrete base?

Yes, or paved slabs. You need a solid, level perimeter for the greenhouse to sit on. Swallow provide a "Base Plan" immediately after you order. You cannot install these greenhouses directly onto grass, soil, or gravel.

  • What is ThermoWood?

ThermoWood is high-quality Scandinavian pine that is heat-treated to over 200°C. This removes moisture and resin, killing the nutrients that rot-causing fungi feed on. It creates a stable, durable timber that lasts for decades without the need for toxic pressure treatment.

  • How long is the warranty?

Swallow offer a comprehensive 12-year warranty on the timber frame against rot and decay. Moving parts and glass are covered for statutory periods, but the structure itself is guaranteed for the long term.
