About Our Modern Greenhouses

This collection brings together 44 greenhouses from five manufacturers, all with one thing in common: powder-coated aluminium frames in black or anthracite grey paired with toughened safety glass. Whether you are matching a new-build with anthracite windows or adding a statement piece to a period garden, these greenhouses look deliberate rather than functional. Prices run from £519 for a Vitavia Venus 6x4 up to £20,990 for a 15x20ft Janssens Kathedral orangery. Browse our wider aluminium greenhouse range if you want to compare traditional silver-framed styles alongside these.

Why We Chose This Range

"This collection has changed since we first built it. Originally it was just the architectural pent roofs from Janssens and the ACD sloping-wall models. Then customers started asking for the same look at lower prices, so we added the Vitavia Venus and Phoenix in black. You can now get a proper black-framed modern greenhouse from £519. The Vitavia Venus 6x4 is genuinely the cheapest way into a modern-looking greenhouse, and the Phoenix gives you extra headroom if you want to grow tall tomatoes or cucumbers. At the other end, the Janssens Kathedral is the largest orangery we sell - 15x20ft of Belgian-made glasswork that turns heads."

Elite Sanctuary 6x8 Greenhouse in black

Matt's Pick: Elite Sanctuary 6x8

Best For: First premium modern greenhouse, UK-made quality

Why I Recommend It: Built in Burnley by a team we have worked with for 20 years. The black frame sits cleanly against any house wall, and the 6ft width means it fits side passages where 8ft models will not. Toughened glass, integral base, low threshold door, sliding roof vent and a 10-year frame warranty. If you want the cheapest modern greenhouse, the Venus 6x4 is £519. But the Sanctuary is where I would put my own money.

How to Choose a Modern Greenhouse

Size and Space

Start by measuring your plot. The Vitavia Venus 6x4 needs just 1.9 x 1.3 m of ground, making it the smallest option here. The Elite Sanctuary spans 6x6 to 6x20ft in a narrow 6ft width that fits most side passages. If you have room, the Janssens pent roof models reach 10x20ft with over 18 sqm of floor space. Leave 600 mm clear around all sides for access and guttering.

Frame Colour

Black is the dominant colour in this range - it matches anthracite windows, dark fencing and modern cladding. The Vitavia Freya comes in anthracite grey, which is slightly lighter and blends with mid-tone metalwork. The ACD Sloping Wall offers silver for homes with lighter finishes. Powder coating means zero repainting for the life of the frame.

Roof Style

Pent (single slope) roofs on the Freya and Janssens Modern give a low, architectural profile that works against walls and boundaries. Apex (peaked) roofs on the Venus, Phoenix, Sanctuary and Zeus offer more headroom at the centre. The ACD sloping-wall design is a hybrid - vertical walls with an angled top section. Read our guide to modern greenhouse styles for side-by-side comparisons.

Budget

The Vitavia Venus Black range starts at £519 for a 6x4. Mid-range black-framed models like the Vitavia Phoenix (from £1,420) and Elite Sanctuary (from £1,740) run £1,420-£3,750. Premium Belgian-made Janssens and ACD designs range from £2,680 to £20,990. All prices include free UK delivery. See our full greenhouse pricing guide.

Quick Tip: Base Requirements

Every modern greenhouse needs a flat, level base. Smaller models (Venus, Freya) sit well on paving slabs with a steel base frame. Larger Janssens and ACD greenhouses are heavier, so a 100 mm concrete pad is recommended. Allow 4-7 days for concrete to cure before delivery day. Read our greenhouse base preparation guide for full instructions.

Matt's Installation Tip

When fitting any modern greenhouse with large glass panes, always have a second person to hold panels while you clip the glazing bars. The toughened safety glass on models like the Zeus and Sanctuary is heavy - a single 8ft pane weighs around 12 kg. We start glazing from the bottom and work upwards, letting each row support the next. On the smaller Venus and Phoenix models, one person can manage, but two still makes the job quicker. If you would rather leave it to us, our nationwide installation service covers every model in this collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a greenhouse modern?

Dark frames, minimal framing and large glass panes define modern greenhouse design. Traditional greenhouses use narrow silver aluminium bars with small panes. Modern models use powder-coated black or anthracite frames with wider glass panels that create clean sightlines. Pent roof profiles and sloping-wall designs add architectural character. The look complements new-build homes with bifold doors and dark window frames.

How much do modern greenhouses cost in 2026?

Modern greenhouses in our range cost from £519 to £20,990. The Vitavia Venus 6x4 in black starts at £519. Mid-range models with extra headroom like the Vitavia Phoenix cost from £1,420. UK-made Elite Sanctuary greenhouses run £1,740-£3,750. Premium Janssens pent roof models start at £7,360. The largest orangery, the Janssens Kathedral 15x20, is £20,990. All prices include free UK mainland delivery.

Are modern greenhouses harder to build than traditional ones?

No, the build process is almost identical to traditional aluminium greenhouses. You assemble the frame from pre-cut sections, clip in the glazing bars and slide the toughened glass into place. The main difference is panel size: modern greenhouses use fewer, larger panes which are heavier to handle but mean fewer fiddly clips. Most customers complete a 6x8ft model in a day. We recommend two people for anything 8x10ft and above.

Can I use a modern greenhouse as a garden room?

Yes, many customers use modern greenhouses as dual-purpose relaxation spaces. The large glass panes, clean aesthetics and low-threshold doors make them popular for reading, dining or working during warmer months. The Janssens pent roof range and ACD sloping-wall models look particularly striking when furnished. For a dedicated year-round insulated space, consider our garden rooms instead.

What is the difference between pent and apex roof greenhouses?

A pent roof slopes in one direction; an apex has two slopes meeting at a central ridge. Pent roofs sit well against walls and fences, giving a low architectural profile. Apex roofs offer more headroom at the centre and drain rainwater to both sides. The Vitavia Freya and Janssens Modern are pent. The Venus, Phoenix, Sanctuary and Zeus are apex. Both styles come in black or anthracite grey.

Do modern greenhouses come with toughened glass?

Yes, every modern greenhouse in this collection includes toughened safety glass. This is 3 mm or 4 mm tempered glass that is roughly five times stronger than standard horticultural glass. If broken, it shatters into small blunt fragments rather than sharp shards. It provides better clarity, stronger wind resistance and improved thermal performance compared to polycarbonate. Read our guide to cleaning greenhouse glass for maintenance tips.

Which modern greenhouse is best for a small garden?

The Vitavia Venus 6x4 (from £519) is the most compact option at just 1.9 x 1.3 m. For a slightly larger growing area, the Venus 6x6 (£579) and Freya 8x6 (£1,239) still fit tight plots. The Elite Sanctuary's 6ft width makes it ideal for side passages, starting at £1,740. For city courtyards, the Janssens Helios Urban 5x8 (£2,680) was designed specifically for urban spaces.
