Lean To Greenhouses

A lean-to greenhouse turns a spare house, garage or boundary wall into a sheltered growing space. We stock widths from 2ft for a narrow alley up to 8ft+ for a full patio, with aluminium frames from Elite, Vitavia and Janssens. Prices start at £549, and every order ships with free UK mainland delivery.

When we fit these against a wall, a south or west-facing aspect gives the strongest growing results. We glaze north-facing runs in toughened glass to hold more heat overnight.

About Our Lean-To Greenhouses

A lean-to greenhouse uses an existing wall as its back, so it holds heat better than a freestanding model. We stock more than 30 lean-to models from Elite, Vitavia and Janssens, priced from £549 to £6,160. Widths run from 2ft for a narrow side passage up to 8ft for a full sun-trap against the house.

Choose by the space you have. See our 4ft wide lean-to greenhouses for a workable single-bench depth, or the small lean-to greenhouses for patios and balconies. Every frame is powder-coated aluminium and glazes in horticultural, toughened or polycarbonate.

Why We Chose This Range

"A lean-to lives or dies by the wall behind it. We picked the Elite Streamline for tight gaps because its low eave clears most kitchen windows, and the Janssens Arcadia Mur for anyone wanting a proper Victorian look against brick. The wall does half the insulation work for you, so a lean-to runs a few degrees warmer overnight than the same size freestanding house."

Matt, Founder of Greenhouse Stores

💡 Tip: Measure the wall height before you order. A standard lean-to needs roughly 6ft 6in of clear wall; a low-height model fits under a bungalow eave or a ground-floor window.

🔧 Matt's Installation Tip: Sealing the wall join

The join between the greenhouse and the wall is where leaks start. We run a bead of exterior-grade silicone behind the wall flashing, then screw into the mortar lines, not the brick face. On a pebble-dashed or rendered wall, fit a timber batten first and bolt the frame to that.

Frequently asked questions

Which way should a lean-to greenhouse face?

South or west-facing gives the best growing results. A south wall collects the most light through the day. An east wall works for morning crops, while a north wall suits shade-tolerant plants and overwintering. We glaze north-facing builds in toughened glass to hold heat.

Are lean-to greenhouses warmer than freestanding ones?

Yes, the house wall acts as a heat store. Brick warmed through the day releases heat overnight, so a lean-to typically sits a few degrees above an equivalent freestanding greenhouse. This cuts winter heating costs and protects tender plants in early spring.

How much wall space do I need?

Most models need about 6ft 6in of clear wall height. Width runs from 2ft up to 8ft. Check for downpipes, vents, and windows before ordering. Our low-height range fits under a bungalow eave where headroom is tight.

Can you install a lean-to greenhouse for me?

Yes, we offer a nationwide installation service. Our fitters handle the base, frame, glazing, and wall seal. Book it at checkout or call the team. Free UK mainland delivery applies to every lean-to order.

What glazing should I choose?

Toughened glass is safest near patios and children. Horticultural glass costs least and gives clear light. Polycarbonate is light, shatterproof, and holds heat well, which suits exposed or windy sites. We fit all three across the Elite and Vitavia ranges.

Do I need planning permission for a lean-to greenhouse?

Usually no, as most fall under permitted development. Limits apply near boundaries, on listed buildings, and in conservation areas. Check height and proximity rules with your local council before you build against a shared wall.
