Choosing your palram canopia sun room lean-to greenhouse
Size selection depends on your available wall space and intended use. The Palram Canopia Sun Room 6x8 Leanto suits most potting and propagation tasks, measuring 6ft deep by 8ft long. If you're planning to use your structure as a genuine conservatory extension, the Palram Canopia Sun Room 8x10 Leanto or 8x12 model provides comfortable seating space alongside plant staging.
Wall attachment requires a solid brick or block wall, timber buildings work but need additional backing. The white resin frame complements most UK housing stock better than green or silver aluminium alternatives. Acrylic side panels scratch more easily than glass but are 50% lighter and safer around children. The polycarbonate roof retains 30% more heat than single-layer materials, extending your growing season by 4-6 weeks at both ends.
Installation takes 6-8 hours for two people with basic DIY skills. Our Greenhouse Installation Service costs £195–£295 depending on size and includes anchoring, glazing, and debris removal. You'll need to prepare a level base using paving slabs, a concrete pad, or our modular base system before installation day.

Common uses for palram sun room structures
Home Conservatory
The Sun Room functions as a genuine living space extension. The 7ft 4" width accommodates a small bistro set, and the acrylic sides stay clearer than polycarbonate alternatives. Heated models maintain 10-12°C through winter with a basic greenhouse heater.
Potting and propagation station
Attach it to your garage or shed for a dedicated growing zone. The low-threshold door lets you wheel tools and compost directly inside, and the twin-wall roof diffuses midday sun that would otherwise scorch seedlings.
Overwintering Space
Tender perennials, citrus trees, and Mediterranean plants survive UK winters when protected from frost. The 4mm roof provides better insulation than single-layer greenhouses, reducing heating costs by roughly 30% compared to standard models.
Wheelchair-accessible growing
The low-threshold entrance and consistent width make this one of the better options for gardeners with mobility requirements. Pair it with low-level staging for comfortable seated cultivation.
Assembly and what's included
Palram's "snap-together" aluminium rail system means you won't need special tools beyond a screwdriver, drill, and spirit level. Each package includes all frame components, glazing panels, door hardware, vents, and fixing brackets. Wall attachment brackets vary based on your wall type, standard brick fixings come in the box, but cavity walls or rendered surfaces may need specialist anchors (available from any DIY store).
The instruction manual uses clear diagrams rather than lengthy text. Most builders complete assembly in 6-8 hours for a 6x8 model, or 8-10 hours for the larger 8x12 version. YouTube has dozens of Palram installation videos showing real-time builds.
If DIY isn't your preference, our professional installation team operates across mainland UK. Prices start at £195 for the smallest models. The Greenhouse Installation Service includes full assembly, glazing, waste removal, and a final quality check. Our installers have built hundreds of Palram structures and can usually complete the job in 3-4 hours.
Frequently asked questions about palram canopia sun room lean-to greenhouses
-
What's the difference between a Sun Room and a conservatory?
A Sun Room costs 60-70% less than a brick-built conservatory and doesn't require planning permission or building control approval. Both serve as home extensions, but the Sun Room functions primarily as a growing space that you can also sit in, whereas conservatories are designed as living rooms that happen to have plants.
-
Can I use this as a year-round growing space?
Yes, the 4mm twin-wall roof provides better insulation than standard greenhouses, maintaining 5-7°C warmer than outside temperatures without supplemental heating. Add a heater to keep frost-sensitive plants safe through winter.
-
How much do Palram Canopia Sun Room Lean-to Greenhouses cost?
Prices range from £999 for the 6x6 model to £2930 for the 8x12 premium version. All models include free UK mainland delivery and a 5-year manufacturer warranty. Installation services cost an additional £195–£295 depending on size and your location.
-
Do I need planning permission to attach this to my house?
Most UK homeowners don't need planning permission for lean-to greenhouses under 4m high and covering less than 50% of the garden area. Listed buildings, conservation areas, and flats always require approval.
-
What type of base do I need?
You need a completely level, solid foundation built against your wall. Paving slabs or concrete pads work best. The base must be 100mm larger than the greenhouse footprint on all sides.
-
How do I add accessories like staging or extra vents?
Accessories such as staging, shelving, and rainwater kits are listed on each product page. All are guaranteed to fit your chosen Sun Room model.
-
Is the acrylic likely to scratch or yellow?
Palram's DP acrylic includes UV stabilizers that prevent yellowing for 10-15 years. Scratching can occur if cleaned abrasively but doesn’t affect light transmission. The polycarbonate roof is highly scratch-resistant.
Sun room vs traditional lean-to greenhouse
Traditional lean-to greenhouses use glass and aluminium frames. The Palram Sun Room hybrid uses acrylic sides (lighter, safer, 100% UV block) and a twin-wall polycarbonate roof (better insulation, diffused light). This combination costs 20-30% less than equivalent glass models while offering comparable performance.
The white resin frame requires zero maintenance and won’t corrode. Glass transmits slightly more light but is heavier and more expensive to replace. For most gardeners, the Sun Room offers the best value unless traditional glass aesthetics are preferred.
