Greenhouse staging is a waist-height bench for potting, seed sowing and plant care. Standard staging height sits between 760mm and 910mm. Most UK staging is aluminium slatted, which won't rot in the humid greenhouse environment. Shelving mounts higher, near the eaves, where warm air collects and seeds germinate faster. Staging prices in our range run from £45 to £179. Most 2-tier aluminium models cost £79-£109.

Key Takeaways

  • Staging goes at waist height (760-910mm) for potting and seed work. Shelving mounts near the roof where it's warmest.
  • Aluminium staging lasts 20+ years with zero maintenance. Wooden staging rots within 3-5 years in a greenhouse.
  • One side only for most greenhouses. Keep the opposite side clear for tomatoes and tall crops in grow bags.
  • Freestanding staging fits any greenhouse brand. Integral (cantilever) staging is brand-specific and won't fit other frames.
Installer's Note

We fit staging in about half the greenhouses we install. The number one mistake? People buy staging for both sides, then realise in May they've got nowhere to put their tomato grow bags. Start with one side. You can always add more later. The other thing we see constantly is wooden staging. It looks lovely on day one. Give it two winters in a greenhouse and it's covered in green mould with soft patches forming at the joints. Aluminium costs a bit more upfront but it'll outlast the greenhouse itself.

What is the difference between staging and shelving?

Staging and shelving do different jobs. Staging sits at waist height, between 760mm and 910mm off the ground. It's your main work surface for potting on, pricking out seedlings, and watering. Think of it like a kitchen worktop for your greenhouse.

Shelving mounts higher up, near the eaves where hot air rises and collects. It's warmer up there by 2-3°C compared to bench level. That makes shelving the better spot for germinating seeds in spring. It's also useful for drying onions and storing pots you're not using.

Most people need both. Put staging along one wall for your work surface, then mount a shelf or two above it for germination trays. The Vitavia aluminium shelf at £55 bolts straight to the glazing bars above your staging.

What height should greenhouse staging be?

It depends on how you work. If you stand to pot and sow, go for 900-910mm. That matches a standard kitchen worktop and saves your back. The Elite Potting Bench sits at 760mm, which suits people who prefer to work seated on a stool.

Most off-the-shelf staging from Vitavia and Palram comes at a fixed height around 800mm. That's a decent middle ground. If you're over 6ft tall, consider adding risers or choosing a taller model. The wrong height will hurt your lower back within the first hour of a potting session.

Matt's Tip: Test the height before you buy

Stand next to your kitchen worktop and mime potting a plant. Comfortable? That's about 900mm. Now try the same thing at your dining table, which is usually around 750mm. Whichever feels better tells you which staging height to go for. I'm 5'10" and I prefer 900mm. My dad's 5'6" and he uses 760mm.

Aluminium vs wood: which staging material lasts?

Aluminium wins in a greenhouse. It's not even close. A greenhouse runs at 70-90% humidity for much of the year. Wood absorbs that moisture, swells, and rots. We've pulled out wooden staging after just two seasons that was soft enough to push a finger through.

Aluminium staging needs nothing beyond an annual wipe down. Fertiliser can leave white marks on it, but that's cosmetic. It won't warp, rot, split, or grow mould. Budget 20+ years of life from aluminium staging.

Wooden staging costs less upfront if you build it yourself (about £25-30 in pressure-treated timber). But you'll need to treat it with preservative every year, and you'll still be replacing it within 5 years. Our wood vs aluminium comparison covers the same trade-off for greenhouse frames.

Powder-coated steel is the middle option. The Bulldog 4 Tier Staging at £89 uses steel with a powder coat finish. It handles weight well and should last 10-15 years if the coating stays intact.

How much weight can greenhouse staging hold?

This varies a lot between products. Here's what the numbers actually mean in practice.

Staging type Weight capacity What that holds in real terms
Light aluminium slatted10-25kg per tierSeed trays and small pots only
Standard aluminium 2-tier (Vitavia)50kg distributedAbout 15 full seed trays of compost
Powder-coated steel (Bulldog)75kg per shelfSeveral large terracotta pots
Palram Canopia 2-tier200kg per tierA bag of compost, watering can, and a dozen pots

If you're potting with bags of compost on the bench, you need at least 50kg capacity. The Palram Canopia 2 Tier at £79 holds 200kg per tier. More than enough for any realistic use.

Freestanding vs integral staging

Freestanding staging sits on the floor with legs. It fits any greenhouse regardless of brand. You can move it around, swap sides, or take it out entirely in summer. This is what most people buy and what we'd recommend.

Integral (cantilever) staging bolts into the T-slots on the glazing bars. No legs means clear floor space underneath for storage or wheelchair access. But here's the catch: it's brand-specific. Elite cantilever brackets only fit Elite frames. They won't work on a Vitavia or Palram greenhouse. We've had customers order the wrong type and it's not a cheap mistake.

How to plan your staging layout

For a 6x8ft greenhouse (the UK's most popular size), we recommend staging along one long side only. That gives you a full 8ft work surface with shelving above. Keep the opposite side free for grow bags.

In an 8x10ft or bigger greenhouse, you can run staging along both long walls with a central path. Leave at least 450mm path width or you'll be knocking pots off with your hips every time you walk through. In practice, 600mm is more comfortable.

For 6x4ft greenhouses, you're limited. One short end is usually the only option, and even then you might prefer the floor space for grow bags. The Vitavia Folding Staging at £75 folds flat against the wall when not in use. Ideal for tight spaces.

Five staging mistakes we see on every other install

  1. Staging on both sides from day one. You'll regret it when tomato season arrives and there's no floor space for grow bags. Start with one side.
  2. Wooden staging in a greenhouse. It rots. Every time. Aluminium or steel only.
  3. Blocking the door swing. Measure your door arc before placing staging. We've seen people wedge staging against a door that can then only open halfway.
  4. Wrong height for the user. If you're tall, standard 760mm staging means hours of bending over. Test your comfortable potting height before buying.
  5. No shelf above the staging. You're wasting the warmest part of the greenhouse. Hang a shelf near the eaves for seed germination trays.

Our greenhouse staging range

We stock staging from four brands across our greenhouses range, covering different budgets and uses.

The Elite Handy Rack at £45 is our cheapest option. A simple rack for small pots and trays.

The Vitavia Folding Staging starts at £75 in silver. It folds flat when you need the floor space back. Good for small greenhouses where space is tight.

For a permanent work surface, the Vitavia 2 Tier Staging at £99 is our best seller. Available in silver, green (£109) and black (£109). Aluminium frame, slatted top, no maintenance.

The Palram Canopia 2 Tier at £79 holds 200kg per tier. Best choice if you work with heavy bags of compost on the bench.

For seed starting, the Elite 3 Tier Seed Tray Frame starts at £98 for the 6-tray version. Three tiers of angled seed tray shelves. We also stock 9-tray (£119) and 12-tray (£129) versions.

At the top end, the Elite Potting Bench at £179 gives you a solid work surface at 760mm. It has a lip around the edge to stop compost falling off.

Matt's Pick: Best all-round staging

Best For: Most greenhouse owners who want a reliable work surface

Why I Recommend It: We've sold more of these than anything else. Aluminium won't rot, it's light enough to move on your own, and the two-tier design gives you extra storage underneath. It fits any greenhouse brand. We've been recommending it for years and never had a complaint.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need staging in my greenhouse?

Not always, but most growers find it makes life much easier. If you're growing tomatoes and cucumbers in floor-level grow bags, you might not need staging at all. But for seed starting, potting on, or herb growing, a waist-height surface saves your back. It also keeps small pots off the cold floor. Our accessories guide ranks staging as the second most useful accessory after an auto-vent.

Should I put staging on one side or both?

One side for most greenhouses, especially 6x8ft and smaller. Keep the opposite side clear for tomatoes, cucumbers, or other crops that grow in floor-level grow bags. You can always add a second bench later if you find you need it. In a 10ft+ greenhouse with a central path, both sides can work.

Is aluminium or wooden staging better?

Aluminium lasts longer and needs no maintenance. Wood looks nice at first but rots within 3-5 years in the humid greenhouse environment. Aluminium staging will outlast the greenhouse itself. The extra cost is worth it for a product that never needs treating, painting, or replacing.

How much does greenhouse staging cost?

Greenhouse staging in our range costs from £45 to £179. The Elite Handy Rack starts at £45. Standard 2-tier aluminium staging from Vitavia costs £79-£109 depending on colour. The Elite Potting Bench at £179 is the premium option with a solid work surface and compost lip.

Can I use any staging in any greenhouse?

Freestanding staging fits any greenhouse brand. It sits on the floor with legs and isn't attached to the frame. Integral (cantilever) staging bolts to the glazing bars and is brand-specific. Elite cantilever brackets only fit Elite frames, not Vitavia or Palram. Check compatibility before ordering integral staging.
