We have installed more than 1,200 wooden greenhouses across the UK since 2017, almost all of them from two UK-trusted brands: Swallow (handcrafted in Yorkshire from Finnish ThermoWood® baked at 215°C) and Lichfield (UK-built redwood pine on a 20mm PVC damp-proof plinth). Prices run from £2,089 for an entry-level 6x4 Lichfield up to £3,888+ for an 8x20 Swallow Raven. Every model includes 3mm toughened safety glass, automatic roof vents, full-length staging on all Swallow ranges, and a 12-year manufacturer warranty. Free professional installation on every Swallow — our own two-person team fits a 6x8 in 4-6 hours.
We have been installing timber greenhouses across the UK since 2012 and currently fit around 180 wooden greenhouses every year. Most customers spend between £3,000 and £4,500. Lead times sit at 8 to 12 weeks from order to install — longer in spring, when we book out by mid-January. The most popular size we install is a 6ft wide wooden greenhouse, which accounts for just over 60% of orders. If timber is not a must-have for you, aluminium greenhouses cost less. For wall-mounted builds see our lean-to greenhouses. Read our concrete base guide before you order. A timber frame holds heat better than aluminium overnight, which matters most for winter growing.
We install around 180 wooden greenhouses a year across the UK and have done since 2012. The range here covers two main routes into timber growing: Swallow (handcrafted in Yorkshire from Finnish ThermoWood®) starting from £2,575, and Lichfield (UK-built redwood pine on a 20mm PVC damp-proof plinth) from £2,089. Every Swallow includes free professional installation; Lichfield models include delivery and a fitted PVC base plinth.
If you are choosing between sizes, the most popular size we install is a 6ft wide wooden greenhouse — it accounts for just over 60% of orders. For tighter plots see 4ft wide and 5ft wide ranges; for serious growing space, 8ft wide wooden greenhouses step up to family-allotment scale. Specialist formats include T-shaped, Victorian, combi greenhouse-shed, and painted models.
Why We Chose This Range
"After 14 years installing timber greenhouses we have stopped stocking anything chemically pressure-treated. ThermoWood is the closest thing to a fit-and-forget timber greenhouse we have found — the wood is baked at 215°C in an oxygen-free kiln, which removes the sugars and resins that fungi need to break it down. We have replaced fewer than 5 frame components across 1,200+ Swallow installs since 2017. The Lichfield range exists for buyers who want a UK-built redwood frame with the same damp-proofing philosophy at a lower entry point."

Premium handcrafted range from £2,575. Finnish redwood baked at 215°C in an oxygen-free kiln, so the timber cannot rot biologically — no annual treatment, ever. Standard kit includes full-length staging, 2 Bayliss XL autovents, 3mm toughened glass and a 20mm PVC damp barrier. Free UK installation by our own team. Lead time 8-12 weeks.
UK-built redwood pine frames from £2,089, sat on a 20mm PVC damp-proof plinth that stops ground moisture wicking up into the timber. Standard 3mm toughened glass, brass fittings, free delivery and fitted plinth. Best for buyers who want a traditional wooden look at £500-£800 under the Swallow entry point.
Swallow ThermoWood frames factory-sprayed in a professional booth before despatch, in 10 heritage colours (Sage, Slate, Olive, Robin’s Egg, Midnight, Cloud Grey and more). The 3-coat microporous paint bonds to the heat-treated timber, so peeling and flaking are vanishingly rare — we have not had a paint warranty claim in 3 years.
Heritage roof line with steeper pitch and ornamental finials (the Swallow Eagle and Swift ranges). Better water run-off in winter and 15-20% more headroom along the ridge than a standard apex roof. Most are dwarf-wall ready and look at home next to period houses.
Best For: The average UK garden buying a wooden greenhouse for the first time.
Why I Recommend It: It is the size that hits the sweet spot for almost every customer — enough space for a family crop of tomatoes plus seedlings and overwintering tender plants, without dominating the garden. Full staging, 2 Bayliss XL autovents, toughened glass and a 12-year warranty are all included as standard. And we install it for you for free.
Price: £3,154
💡 Tip: Aim for at least 2.5x more growing space than you think you need. The single most common regret we hear from customers in year two is that they bought too small. A 6x8 gives you 48 sq ft — enough for 6 cordon tomato plants in the ground or large pots, full-length staging on one side, and headroom for a hanging shelf. Anything under 6x6 fills up by mid-May.
Every wooden greenhouse failure we have ever come back to has started at the base. ThermoWood doesn’t rot biologically — but if the frame sits on an out-of-level pad, the door drops, the glass goes under torsion stress, and silicone seals fail at the corners within two winters.
For a Swallow we ask for a base level within 5mm corner-to-corner and within the published footprint. Paving slabs on a 50mm compacted MOT-type-1 bed are fine for anything up to 6x10. For 6x12 and above, a poured concrete pad or brick plinth is worth the extra outlay. Read our brick plinth guide or concrete base guide before you book delivery.
Budget bands we see most often: £2,000-£2,800 for an entry-level 6x4 or 6x6, £3,000-£4,500 for the popular 6x8 to 6x10 Swallow Kingfisher range, and £5,000-£8,500 for 8ft wide, Victorian, and Combi shed-greenhouse models. Painted finishes add £400-£900 depending on size. Most customers spend £3,000-£4,500 once they have factored in a base and a couple of accessories.
Aluminium is a viable alternative if budget is the deciding factor — see our aluminium greenhouses range, which starts from around £400. For wall-mounted growing space, our lean-to greenhouses range covers both timber and aluminium options.
Wooden greenhouses from Greenhouse Stores start at £2,089 for a Lichfield 6x4 and run to £6,720+ for an 8ft wide Swallow Raven. The bulk of our customers spend £3,000-£4,500 on a Swallow Kingfisher 6x8 or 6x10 with free installation. Painted finishes add £400-£900. Most UK rivals quote installation separately at £400-£900 on top.
A ThermoWood Swallow lasts 25-30+ years with no chemical retreatment because the timber is heat-treated, not pressure-treated — the sugars fungi feed on have been baked out. Across 1,200+ Swallow installs since 2017 we have replaced fewer than 5 frame components. Lichfield redwood pine on a PVC plinth lasts 20-25 years. Cheaper softwood greenhouses (not stocked here) typically need full re-treatment every 2-3 years and often fail within 10 years.
Wooden frames hold heat better overnight because timber conducts heat 400x more slowly than aluminium, which matters for winter growing and early seedlings. Aluminium frames are cheaper (£400-£1,500), lighter and require zero maintenance. Choose wood for year-round growing, period gardens, and longevity. Choose aluminium for tight budgets, exposed coastal sites, and minimal upkeep.
ThermoWood greenhouses (Swallow) need no chemical treatment — the wood is rot-proof by physics, not by chemistry. Apply a clear wood oil every 4-5 years if you want to preserve the rich brown colour; left untreated it silvers to a soft grey. Lichfield redwood pine is dip-treated at the factory and benefits from a coat of preservative every 3-4 years on cut ends and joints.
Anything up to 6x10 can sit on paving slabs on a 50mm compacted MOT-type-1 bed, level within 5mm corner-to-corner. For 6x12 and larger, or any greenhouse on clay or sloping ground, a poured concrete pad or a 2-3 course brick plinth is the safer call. Our install team measures the base on arrival and will not erect a frame on an out-of-level pad — it voids the warranty.
Every Swallow ThermoWood greenhouse includes free professional installation by our two-person team — we travel UK-wide and a 6x8 install takes 4-6 hours. Lichfield models include delivery and a fitted PVC damp-proof plinth; full installation is available as a paid add-on (£450-£750 depending on size). Palram Canopia Natura is DIY-friendly with optional install at £350.
Swallow wooden greenhouses run on an 8-12 week lead time from order to installed in your garden. Spring (March-May) is our busiest period and lead times can stretch to 14 weeks. Lichfield models ship in 3-4 weeks. If you want a greenhouse for the spring growing season, order by mid-January.
