Why choose a painted wooden greenhouse?
Painted wooden greenhouses offer instant garden style without years of weathering. The factory-applied finish protects your investment from day one, shielding ThermoWood frames from UV damage and moisture. Our spray-booth process applies 3-4 even coats, creating a smooth, automotive-quality finish that significantly outperforms brush-painted or dipped alternatives.
- Natural Rot & Warp Resistance: The heat treatment process removes moisture and stabilises the timber
- A Flawless Finish: No knotholes or visible grain, just a flat, bright surface
- Better Heat Retention: The insulated timber helps maintain a more stable internal temperature than standard timber greenhouses
Choose from heritage greens and blues or contemporary greys to match your garden aesthetic. White painted wooden greenhouses reflect more light internally, making them ideal for propagation. Grey painted wooden greenhouse models blend well with modern garden designs, while green painted wooden greenhouse options suit traditional cottage gardens. Replacement paint for future touch-ups is available directly from Greenhouse Stores, guaranteeing colour-matched maintenance for decades.
How to choose your painted wooden greenhouse
Width determines functionality: 4ft Swallow Lark greenhouses suit balconies and small patios, while 8ft Swallow Raven greenhouses accommodate commercial growing. Lengths range from compact 4ft units to substantial 20ft structures, with most customers choosing 6-10ft lengths for typical garden plots.
💡 Prices start from £1,850 for entry-level painted wooden greenhouses and extend to £8,500+ for premium large models with additional features. Mid-range options (£2,500–£4,200) offer the best value, including full staging and automatic ventilation. Every painted wooden greenhouse qualifies for free UK mainland delivery and professional installation, a service worth £400–£800 that we include at no charge.
Consider your base before ordering. We provide complete guides for building a concrete base for a greenhouse and constructing a paving slab base for a wooden greenhouse. Proper foundation work ensures your painted wooden greenhouse stands level and performs optimally for its full 25-30 year lifespan.
Our superior paint finish: the swallow difference
Each Swallow greenhouse frame receives automotive-grade treatment. Frames travel through spray booths on conveyors, receiving uniform coverage across every surface. The drying tunnel cures each coat evenly before the next application, this three-coat process makes a finish depth that hand-painted alternatives cannot match.
The result? A smooth, colour-consistent surface with zero brush marks or drips. Our painted wooden greenhouses maintain their appearance considerably longer than traditional wooden greenhouses requiring annual treatment. The smooth finish also prevents dirt accumulation and simplifies cleaning, a quick rinse restores the original lustre annually.
💎 This process costs us more than standard finishing methods, but delivers painted wooden greenhouses that look showroom-fresh for decades. If you're exploring our Modern design greenhouses collection, you'll notice the same quality finish across all Swallow models.
Why We Chose This Range
“We stock Swallow Painted greenhouses because of the 'Shrinkage Stripe' problem found in cheaper alternatives. When you paint a greenhouse yourself, you paint over the joints. As timber naturally contracts in summer, white lines of unpainted wood appear at every tongue-and-groove connection. Swallow sprays their ThermoWood components in a controlled factory booth, so coverage deep into the joints so the finish looks flawless year-round.”
, Matt, Founder of Greenhouse StoresMatt's installation tip: stopping "mud splash"
If you choose a light colour like Lily White or Ivory, you must protect the bottom boards from rain splashback. If rain hits soil or grass next to the greenhouse, it splashes mud onto the paint which can stain over time.
I recommend laying a 300mm border of decorative gravel or paving around the perimeter of your base. This 'splash strip' ensures that when it rains, clean water splashes back onto the timber rather than mud, keeping your greenhouse looking pristine.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
How much do painted wooden greenhouses cost?
Painted wooden greenhouses range from £1,850 for small 4x4ft models to £8,500+ for premium 8x20ft structures. Most customers invest £2,500–£4,200 for mid-range painted wooden greenhouses (6x8ft to 8x12ft) that include full staging, automatic vents, and toughened glass. All prices include free UK mainland installation and 12-year warranty coverage.
-
Will the paint peel or fade on painted wooden greenhouses?
Our spray-applied finish resists peeling for 25+ years when maintained properly. The three-coat automotive process bonds paint directly to ThermoWood fibres, creating flexibility that moves with natural timber expansion. UV-resistant pigments help prevent fading over many years. Annual washing with mild soap maintains appearance; replacement paint available for future touch-ups guarantees perfect colour matching.
-
What happens if I scratch the paint?
Every greenhouse comes with a small pot of colour-matched touch-up paint. Because the underlying ThermoWood is rot-resistant, a scratch is just cosmetic, not structural.
-
What timber is used under the paint?
All our painted wooden greenhouses use ThermoWood, Finnish timber heat-treated to 212°C. This process removes moisture, stabilises dimensions, and creates natural rot resistance without chemicals. ThermoWood maintains structural integrity considerably longer than untreated pine while accepting paint better. The result: painted wooden greenhouses that combine durability with a flawless finish.
-
How long does the paint finish last?
Professional spray-applied finishes maintain full appearance for 15-20 years with minimal maintenance. Basic annual cleaning extends this to 25+ years. The three-coat depth provides significant protection, even if the surface shows minor wear, two underlying coats continue protecting the ThermoWood. We supply colour-matched replacement paint for easy touch-ups after 15-20 years.
-
Do painted wooden greenhouses need more maintenance than natural wood?
Painted wooden greenhouses require less maintenance, no annual oiling or staining needed. Wash frames annually with mild soap solution and inspect for minor scratches. Natural wooden greenhouses demand treatment every 12-18 months to prevent deterioration. Over 20 years, painted models save significant hours of maintenance work and considerable costs in treatment products.
-
Can I order a custom colour?
Standard range includes 10 carefully selected colours (white, grey, green, blue variations) covering 98% of customer preferences. These colours maintain availability for replacement paint purchases. Custom colour matching requires minimum orders and extended lead times. Most customers find Swallow Swan or Swallow Cygnet colours suit their needs perfectly.
