About our small wooden greenhouses
Our small wooden greenhouse collection features 15 models across four ranges, starting from £2,089 for the Lichfield 6x4. The Swallow Lark 4ft wide range starts from £2,575. The Swallow Robin 5ft wide starts from £2,669. The Swallow Kingfisher 6ft wide starts from £2,764. Every Swallow model includes free professional installation, toughened safety glass, and an automatic roof vent as standard.
These are proper greenhouses in compact frames. The 4ft Lark fits side passages and tiny gardens. The 5ft Robin gives you staging on both sides with a centre path. The 6ft Kingfisher offers the most internal space while still fitting a standard garden plot. All use Finnish Thermowood framing that resists rot for decades without chemical treatment. If you need something bigger, see our 8ft wide wooden greenhouses for the full-size Swallow range.
Why We Chose This Range
"I put this small wooden greenhouse collection together for customers who want Swallow quality but don't have room for an 8ft model. The Lark at 4ft wide is genuinely narrow enough for a side return, but you still get proper Thermowood construction, toughened glass, and an automatic vent. The Kingfisher at 6ft wide is my go-to recommendation for anyone with a modest garden. It's wide enough for staging both sides and a comfortable working path. I've installed all three models in gardens under 30 square metres and they transform what people can grow."

Tip: Wooden greenhouses provide 30-40% better natural insulation than aluminium alternatives, keeping temperatures up to 5°C warmer on cold nights without extra heating. That means earlier sowing in spring and later growing into autumn. For the best results, position your greenhouse in a sheltered, south-facing spot.

Matt's pick for small wooden greenhousesBest For: First-time greenhouse owners and small gardens Why I Recommend It: The Robin 5x6 is the small greenhouse I recommend most. At 5ft wide you get staging on both sides with a proper path down the middle. The 6ft length gives you enough room for tomatoes, salads, and a few herbs without wasting space. It's the smallest Robin I'd buy for year-round growing. Price: £2,856 |
Matt's Installation Tip: Bases for Small Greenhouses
Small doesn't mean easier when it comes to the base. These compact greenhouses need a dead-level foundation just like the big ones. For 4ft and 5ft models, paving slabs on 50mm compacted sand work brilliantly and cost £80-£150 depending on size. The smaller footprint means you can lay the base in an afternoon. For dwarf wall Kingfisher models, you'll need a brick plinth built first. Whatever you choose, get it level to within 5mm. Our team checks every diagonal before we start the build. Read our concrete base guide for step-by-step instructions.
All Swallow small wooden greenhouses include free UK mainland delivery and free professional installation. The Lichfield 6x4 starts at £2,089, making it the most affordable timber greenhouse in our range. Swallow natural Thermowood models range from £2,575 (Lark 4x4) to £2,958 (Kingfisher 6x6). Painted models range from £3,059 to £3,513. Every Swallow model comes with a 12-year structural guarantee.
Standard features across the Swallow range include toughened safety glass, automatic roof vent openers, full-length slatted staging, a locking single door, and stainless steel fixings. The Finnish Thermowood frame needs no chemical treatment and resists rot for decades. Read our wooden vs aluminium comparison to see how timber stacks up against metal frames. -
What is the smallest wooden greenhouse you sell?
The Swallow Lark 4x4 is our smallest wooden greenhouse at just 1220mm x 1290mm. It fits in spaces under 2 square metres. Despite its compact size, it includes toughened glass, an automatic roof vent, full-length staging, and a locking door. Priced at £2,575 in natural Thermowood. -
What size small wooden greenhouse do I need?
A 4ft wide greenhouse suits narrow spaces, 5ft gives you staging both sides, and 6ft is the most versatile. For seed starting and herbs, a 4x4 or 4x6 Lark is plenty. For growing tomatoes and salads, choose a 5x6 Robin or larger. For the most internal workspace, the 6x6 Kingfisher gives you room to turn around and work comfortably. Measure your space and leave 300mm clearance on all sides.
-
Do small wooden greenhouses include free installation?
Yes, every Swallow model includes free professional installation by our fitting team. We deliver and build the greenhouse on your prepared base, typically completing the job in 3-4 hours. Installation covers the frame, glazing, door, vent, staging, and gutters. You just need a level base ready before we arrive.
-
What base does a small wooden greenhouse need?
All models need a level, solid base such as paving slabs or concrete. For these compact sizes, paving slabs on 50mm compacted sand are the simplest and cheapest option (£80-£150). The base must be level to within 5mm across the diagonals. Dwarf wall Kingfisher models need a brick plinth built to Swallow's specifications. Existing level patios often work without modification.
-
How long do Thermowood greenhouses last?
Finnish Thermowood frames last 30+ years without chemical treatment. The heat-treatment process at 212°C removes moisture and changes the wood's cell structure, giving natural resistance to rot, fungus, and insects. Swallow backs every model with a 12-year structural guarantee. You can apply optional wood oil every 4-5 years to maintain the natural honey colour, or let it weather to silver-grey.
-
What can I realistically grow in a small wooden greenhouse?
A 5x6 Robin comfortably supports 6-8 tomato plants plus herbs and salads. The 4ft Lark models suit propagation, seed starting, herbs, and overwintering tender plants. The 6ft Kingfisher handles a full range of crops including tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and chillies. The superior insulation of Thermowood extends your growing season by 4-6 weeks at each end compared to unheated aluminium. See our beginner's greenhouse guide for planting advice.
