Frequently Asked Questions

• How much do 8ft wide wooden greenhouses cost?

Our 8ft Swallow greenhouses range from £2,989 to £16,161. The traditional Raven starts at £2,989 for the 8x4 dwarf wall model. Victorian Eagles begin at £7,963. T-shaped Mallards from £8,847 and Rook potting sheds from £4,259. Painted finishes add roughly 30% to the natural price. All prices include free delivery and free professional installation.

• What is the difference between the Raven, Eagle, Mallard, Swan, and Rook?

Five ranges covering traditional, Victorian, T-shaped, and potting shed designs. The Raven is a traditional straight greenhouse and the best value. The Eagle adds Victorian ridge cresting and decorative finials. The Mallard is T-shaped with an extra wing for workspace. The Swan combines T-shape with Victorian styling. The Rook is half greenhouse, half timber potting shed. All use the same Finnish Thermowood frame and toughened glass.

• Do 8ft wooden greenhouses include free installation?

Yes, every 8ft Swallow greenhouse includes free professional installation. Our team delivers and builds the greenhouse on your prepared base. A standard Raven takes 4-5 hours to install. Larger T-shaped models and potting sheds take 6-8 hours. Installation covers the frame, glazing, doors, vents, gutters, and staging.

• What base does an 8ft wooden greenhouse need?

All 8ft models need a level, solid base such as concrete or paving slabs. Paving slabs on compacted sand suit models up to 8x12. Longer greenhouses need a concrete pad. Dwarf wall models require a brick plinth built to Swallow's specifications. The base must be level to within 5mm across the diagonals. Our installation team checks this before starting the build.

• What can I grow in an 8ft wide greenhouse?

An 8ft greenhouse supports a full range of crops year-round. The double-door width and staging on both sides let you grow tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and aubergines in summer, then switch to salads, herbs, and overwintering crops in autumn. An 8x12 Raven comfortably handles 12-16 cordon tomato plants. The larger T-shaped Mallard gives you a dedicated propagation area in the wing.

• How long does a Thermowood greenhouse last?

Finnish Thermowood frames last 30+ years without chemical treatment. The heat-treatment process removes moisture and changes the wood's cell structure, giving natural resistance to rot, fungus, and insects. Swallow backs every model with a 12-year structural guarantee. You can apply optional wood oil every 4-5 years to keep the natural colour, or let it weather to silver-grey. Read our guide on plants that can damage greenhouse frames to protect your investment.

• Should I choose a standard, dwarf wall, or painted greenhouse?

Standard Thermowood is the best value and needs zero maintenance. Dwarf wall models sit on a brick plinth (you build the wall, we fit the greenhouse on top) for a traditional estate look and extra thermal mass. Painted models get a factory-applied finish in 8 colours that lasts 8-10 years before recoating. The Thermowood underneath gives identical rot resistance in all three configurations.
