About Greenhouse Insulation & Thermal Efficiency
Effective greenhouse insulation is the most significant factor in reducing winter running costs, potentially lowering heating bills by up to 50%. Our professional-grade UV-stabilised bubble wrap features large 30mm bubbles for maximum air entrapment, creating a secondary thermal barrier against frost. Unlike standard packaging wrap, our horticultural-grade materials are engineered to withstand high UV exposure without becoming brittle, ensuring multi-season protection for tender perennials and early spring seedlings.
Why We Chose This Range
“We curating our insulation range based on light transmission vs. thermal resistance. The mistake many gardeners make is using standard small-bubble wrap which blocks too much winter sun. We chose our 30mm large-bubble film because it offers the optimum balance: high air-gap insulation with minimal light diffusion. We also specifically selected our 'Alligator' clips over standard bolts because they allow for a 'double-skin' effect without having to remove your glazing, a technical detail that saves hours of installation time.”

| Insulation Type | Best For | Heat Retention | Light Trans. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Large 30mm Bubble | Main Over-wintering | Highest | 85% |
| Small 10mm Bubble | Budget Protection | Moderate | 75% |
| Thermal Fleece | Temporary Frost Snaps | Low | 60% |
🔧 Matt's Installation Tip: The "Air Gap" Secret
To get the 50% heat saving mentioned above, do not pull the bubble wrap tight against the glass. The magic of insulation happens in the dead air space. Use our offset spacers or 'Alligator' clips to create a 10mm-20mm gap between the glazing and the bubble wrap. This creates a 'triple-glazing' effect that stops the cold from conducting directly through the aluminium frame.
Crucially, only insulate the sides and the roof; do not cover your louvre vents. You still need air exchange to prevent botrytis. If you find condensation building up behind the bubble wrap, simply peel back a corner during a sunny day to allow the moisture to escape. Read our full winterisation guide here.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Does greenhouse bubble wrap really work?
Yes. UV-stabilised bubble wrap creates an insulating layer of still air that significantly slows heat loss. In a standard 8x6 greenhouse, it can keep the internal temperature 3-5°C higher than an uninsulated house, meaning your greenhouse heater runs far less frequently.
-
Can I use standard packaging bubble wrap?
We strongly advise against it. Standard bubble wrap is not UV-stabilised; the sun's rays will cause the plastic to become brittle and crumble into thousands of tiny pieces within months. Horticultural grade insulation is designed to last 3-5 seasons.
-
How much bubble wrap do I need for an 8x6 greenhouse?
For a standard 8ft x 6ft greenhouse, you typically need approximately 15-20 metres of 1500mm wide bubble wrap to cover the roof and all four sides effectively.
