About Our Modern Greenhouses
Our modern greenhouse range holds 42 in-stock models, every one with a powder-coated black or anthracite-grey aluminium frame and toughened safety glass. These are design-led greenhouses for new-builds, courtyards and garden-room settings. Prices start at £519 for a Vitavia Venus 6x4 and rise to the flagship Janssens Kathedral orangery. We fit these greenhouses ourselves, so the guidance below comes from real installs.
If a dark frame is your main priority, browse our wider black greenhouses. For a premium classic look, see our orangery greenhouses. To compare every metal-framed style side by side, view the full aluminium greenhouse range.
Why We Chose This Range
"We built this collection around one idea: a greenhouse that looks deliberate, not bolted on. The Vitavia Venus in black is the cheapest way in. The Elite Sanctuary is the one I trust most for build quality. The Janssens pent-roof models are the show-stoppers. Customers kept asking for the dark-framed look at sensible money, so we widened the range until every budget had a home."

Quick Tip: Match Your Frame to the House
Black frames sit cleanly against anthracite windows, dark cladding and modern fencing. Anthracite grey, as on the Vitavia Freya, blends with mid-tone metalwork and lighter brick. Stand outside and look at your window frames first. The greenhouse should echo them, not fight them.
🔧 Matt's Installation Tip: Glaze From the Bottom Up
The large panes on modern models are heavy. A single 8ft toughened pane weighs around 12 kg. We always glaze from the bottom row first and let each row support the one above. Have a second person hold panels while you clip the glazing bars. On the small Venus and Freya, one person can cope. On the Zeus and Sanctuary, never work alone. If you would rather we did it, our installation service covers every model here.
Matt's Pick for Design-Led Buyers
Best For: A first premium modern greenhouse that fits a narrow plot
Why I Recommend It: The Elite Sanctuary is built in Burnley by a team we have dealt with for years. The 6ft width slots into side passages where 8ft models will not. You get a black frame, toughened glass, integral base, low-threshold door and a sliding roof vent. It is the model I would buy myself.

How to Choose a Modern Greenhouse
Size and Space
Measure your plot first. The Vitavia Venus 6x4 needs just 1.9 x 1.3 m of ground. The Elite Sanctuary keeps a narrow 6ft width across every size, so it suits side passages. The Janssens pent models reach 10x20ft. Leave 600 mm clear around all sides for access and guttering.
Roof Style
Pent roofs slope one way and sit low against a wall or fence. The Janssens Modern range uses this profile. Apex roofs peak at a central ridge and give more headroom inside. The Venus, Phoenix, Sanctuary and Zeus are all apex. Pick pent for a low architectural look, apex for growing height.
Budget
The Vitavia Venus Black range starts at £519. Mid-range black-framed models like the Vitavia Phoenix (from £1,420) and Elite Sanctuary (from £1,740) suit most gardens. Premium Janssens and ACD designs go higher. Every price includes free UK mainland delivery.
Glass and Build
Every model here uses toughened safety glass as standard. The panes are larger than on traditional greenhouses, which means fewer clips but heavier lifting. Powder-coated frames never need repainting. Most 6x8ft models take one day to build. We advise two people for anything 8x10ft and above.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
What makes a greenhouse modern?
Dark frames, minimal framing and large glass panes define modern greenhouse design. Traditional greenhouses use narrow silver bars with small panes. Modern models use powder-coated black or anthracite frames with wider glass panels and clean sightlines. Pent roofs and sloping-wall designs add architectural character. The look suits new-build homes with bifold doors and dark window frames.
-
How much do modern greenhouses cost?
Modern greenhouses in our range start at £519. The Vitavia Venus 6x4 in black is the cheapest entry point. Mid-range models with extra headroom like the Vitavia Phoenix cost from £1,420. UK-made Elite Sanctuary greenhouses start at £1,740. Premium Janssens pent-roof models start at £7,360. All prices include free UK mainland delivery.
-
Are modern greenhouses harder to build than traditional ones?
No, the build process is almost identical to a standard aluminium greenhouse. You assemble the frame from pre-cut sections, clip in the glazing bars and slide the glass into place. The one difference is panel size. Modern models use fewer, larger panes that are heavier to lift but quicker to fit. Most customers finish a 6x8ft model in a day.
-
Can I use a modern greenhouse as a garden room?
Yes, many customers use them as dual-purpose relaxation spaces. The large glass panes, clean lines and low-threshold doors make them popular for reading, dining or working in warmer months. The Janssens pent-roof and ACD sloping-wall models look striking when furnished. For a year-round insulated space, choose a dedicated garden room instead.
-
What is the difference between pent and apex roof greenhouses?
A pent roof slopes one way; an apex has two slopes meeting at a ridge. Pent roofs sit low against walls and fences for an architectural profile. Apex roofs give more headroom at the centre and drain rain to both sides. The Janssens Modern range is pent. The Venus, Phoenix, Sanctuary and Zeus are apex. Both come in black or anthracite grey.
