Frequently Asked Questions

• How much does a 4x6 greenhouse cost?

Our 4x6 greenhouses range from £479 to £2,762. The Elite Windsor lean-to with horticultural glass is the most affordable at £479. Freestanding Elite Compacts start from £619. Package deals with accessories from £899. The premium Swallow Lark wooden greenhouse costs £2,762 including free installation. All include free UK delivery.

• What can I grow in a 4x6 greenhouse?

A 4x6 greenhouse comfortably holds 6-8 cordon tomato plants or 40-60 seed trays on staging. You can grow tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, herbs, and salad leaves through summer. In spring, use it for seed starting and hardening off. In autumn and winter, grow salads, overwinter tender plants, and force early bulbs. The 24 square feet gives you genuine year-round growing capability.

• Should I choose a 4x6 or 6x4 greenhouse?

Both give you the same 24 square feet, but the layout differs significantly. A 4x6 is 4ft wide and 6ft deep, you work from the door end and can fit it in narrower spaces. A 6x4 greenhouse is 6ft wide and 4ft deep, you get a wider door, central path access, and staging on both sides. Choose 4x6 for narrow plots; choose 6x4 for wider gardens where you want to walk inside.

• Which glazing is best for a 4x6 greenhouse?

Toughened safety glass is the best all-round choice for most buyers. It offers excellent light transmission (90%+), shatters safely into small granules if broken, and lasts the lifetime of the frame. Horticultural glass is cheaper but breaks into sharp shards. 6mm polycarbonate provides the best insulation (reduces heat loss by 40% vs single glass) and is virtually unbreakable, but lets through slightly less light. Read our glass vs polycarbonate comparison.

• Do 4x6 greenhouses need a base?

Yes, all greenhouses need a level, solid base for the frame to sit on. For a 4x6, paving slabs on 50mm compacted sand are the simplest option and cost around £60-£100. The base must be exactly 1220mm x 1830mm and level to within 5mm. Existing level patios often work without modification. The Swallow Lark needs a slightly larger base to accommodate its timber frame.

• Is a 4x6 lean-to or freestanding greenhouse better?

Lean-to greenhouses save space and keep 3-5°C warmer against a heated wall. The Elite Windsor mounts against any solid wall or fence. Freestanding Elite Compacts get more sunlight from all sides and can be positioned anywhere in the garden. Choose lean-to if you have a sunny south or west-facing wall. Choose freestanding if you want maximum light and flexibility.

• Can I assemble a 4x6 greenhouse myself?

Yes, the Elite Compact and Windsor are designed for DIY assembly by 1-2 people in 2-4 hours. Full instructions and all fixings are included. You'll need a Phillips screwdriver, adjustable spanner, and a spirit level. The Swallow Lark comes with free professional installation by our team so you don't need to build it yourself.
