About Our 4ft Wide Sheds
Our 4ft wide sheds start at £270 and run to large 20ft-long models. The 4ft (1.2m) depth is the key measurement here. It lets a shed sit against a fence, down a side return, or along a tight boundary where a 6ft-deep shed would block the path. We stock plastic, wooden, and steel security models. So you can match the build to what you store and how exposed the spot is.
When we site these against a fence, we leave a 30cm gap at the back for airflow and timber treatment. The Power wooden range covers overlap, shiplap, apex, and pent roofs in lengths from 4ft to 20ft. The Palram plastic models suit damp shaded corners that rot timber. For lockable tool storage, the steel security sheds resist crowbar attack far better than any timber door. Need a workbench too? See our potting sheds. For a grow-and-store combination, look at our combined greenhouse and shed units, or our 4ft wide greenhouses for the same narrow footprint.
Why We Chose This Range
"A 4ft depth is the one number people forget to check. I have fitted dozens of these along side returns and fence lines where nothing wider would clear the path. The Power wooden sheds are my workhorse choice. The pressure-treated overlap holds up to British weather, and the door lands on the long side, so you never lose floor depth to the swing."
Matt, Greenhouse Stores
Matt's Tip
Measure your access point before the shed itself. The panels are just over 4ft wide flat-packed. You need 60cm of working space on at least one long side to assemble and treat the timber. Mark the base footprint with string lines first. It saves moving a half-built shed.
Installer's Note: Getting the Base Right
Every shed here needs a flat, level base. We use paving slabs on a compacted sub-base, flat to within 10mm across the run. For wooden sheds, sit the bearers on the slabs, not the soil. This keeps the floor off wet ground and stops rot. Anchor steel and plastic models with the supplied fixings against wind lift.
Matt's Pick for Narrow Gardens
Best For: general tool and bike storage down a side return
Why I Recommend It: the pent roof runs water off the back, the overlap timber is forgiving, and the 6ft length fits most narrow plots.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
How deep is a 4ft wide shed?
A 4ft wide shed measures roughly 1.2m front to back. That depth lets it sit tight against a fence or down a side return. Lengths run from 4ft up to 20ft, so floor space comes from the length, not the depth. Check the external footprint, as some models add a few centimetres for roof overhang.
-
Which material suits a narrow side passage?
Plastic and steel both handle shaded, damp passages better than timber. A side passage stays cool and wet, which rots untreated wood faster. Palram plastic never rots and needs no treatment. Steel security sheds resist damp and break-ins. Treated timber works if you keep it painted and leave airflow behind it.
-
Do I need a base for a 4ft shed?
Yes, every shed here needs a flat, level base. Paving slabs on a compacted sub-base are the easiest option. The base must be flat to within 10mm. At 4ft deep, a single row of slabs covers most of the footprint. Anchor the shed down with the supplied fixings to stop wind lift.
-
Are steel security sheds worth the extra cost?
For bikes, mowers, and power tools, the security upgrade pays off. Galvanised steel panels and a pad-lockable handle resist crowbar attack far better than a timber door. Many home insurers ask for a lockable metal store for high-value garden kit. For low-value items, treated timber is fine and cheaper.
-
Can I fit a 4ft shed against my fence?
Yes, the 4ft depth is designed to sit against a boundary. Leave a 30cm gap at the back for airflow and timber treatment. Hang the door on the long front side so it opens into the garden. Check the panels clear your access point before ordering, as they are just over 4ft wide flat-packed.
